A book report is an informative summary of the content of a book that includes your opinions, and ends with an overall recommendation to your reader. By allowing for the expression of thoughts and opinions, a book report can help improve your analytical and communication skills (and your writing skills, of course). Read on show for some tips that will help you get an A on that next book report!
When selecting a book for your report, it can be helpful to first find out some basic information, such as the genre of the book, if it’s a novel r part of a series, information about the author, etc. Also, try to consider which aspects of the book appeal to you. If you don’t enjoy the book you have to analyze, it’ll reflect poorly in your report.
In the initial pre-writing stage of your report, create an outline that covers all the major elements of the book, such as the plot, characters, and setting. Organize these by categorization using headings, sub-headings, bullet points, or lists. You should also make note os specific details and quotes from the book that you want to include.
Of course, take notes as you read to keep track of character actions, key events, settings, and the major topic and symbolism used. With a non-fiction book, note its main ideas. This way, you’ll be able to go back and incorporate these ideas into your paper. Your best thoughts will come when you’re most immersed in the story, so don’t let them go to waste! Write in the margins of the book, or keep a separate notebook to jot down your thoughts about a scene and corresponding page numbers.
In terms of basic formatting, open your report with the name, author, genre, and publication date. If your teacher gives you more specific direction, be sure to follow them to a T.
As with any academic paper, begin your book report with an introductory paragraph. First, utilize a one or two sentence attention grabber that transitions into and concludes with your thesis statement. Your thesis statement should be one or two sentences long and should present the topic of your report to your reader. It can also help guide your writing and keep your opinions focused.
Within the body of your report, include sentences that have a similar basic structure. And try to use an active voice with descriptive language. Also, separate your information into paragraphs that flow together by including transitional wording. Describe the book’s characters, purpose, and plot. Here, make sure to include basic points such as examples and quotes from the book to support your opinions.
Your conclusion should essentially summarize what you said in your thesis statement. Also explain what you have learned from reading the book and note any important points.
Also be sure to include the following in any book report, when necessary:
It can sometimes be helpful to first print out a version of your report before you submit it. By reading through it slowly and carefully, you can check for any typos or minor errors. Make sure you’ve followed all of your teacher’s directions. For example, are your fonts, font sizes, and margins all correct? Once you’ve checked your work, back it away for school and celebrate your successful book report!
