A Holy Traveler
By: Gen1900
The sweet smelling water from Yellowstone’s falls greeted my senses pleasantly. I stood with some others near an over look at the falls and the replica of Grand Canyon.
Although it wasn’t the real deal, it still had a air of magnificence.
My day was filled with plans that I made already. First, going to the see the famous water falls. Check. Now I set myself on hiking the rest of the afternoon.
A trail near the falls I decided to take. It was called, “Bear Paw,” and I wasn’t surprised by the meaning of the name. A gigantic sign warned me at the entrance of, and I quote, “Grizzlies may encounter you on this trail. Do not have contact with the bear, just try to turn around if you can.”
I had a large purple backpack lugged on my shoulders. It carried a lot of things including, a first aid kit, tent ( if hopefully not needed), sleeping bag, food for lunch, and many other items.
My spiked shoes turned the gravel to dust as I walked on the trail.
A strong perfume of pines wafted by my nose, and chipmunks chirped in the far off bushes.
After a bit, I decided to take a break and eat it. Who knew peanut butter and jelly sandwiches could taste so good.
Then I started back up hiking.
Before I knew it the sun was starting to go done and I hadn’t reached an exit.
Meanwhile at the entrance, forest rangers had placed a gate, closing the trail temporarily.
Apparently a boy claimed to have seen a grizzly and his mom frantic called the authorities.
They said everybody seemed to be off the trail . . . or so they thought.
Soon enough the sun was almost gone and I STILL was on the trail. I seemed to be going around in circles.
Then before I knew it the moon was up, shining high in the sky.
I still walked, becoming a little paranoid.
All of the sudden a heavy sound thumped behind me. I stopped and slowly turned me eyes to look.
There behind me was a grizzly, his shaggy arched in annoyance.
“Go away! Go away! ” I shouted.
Noise was suppose to scare him away, but this one didn’t move at all.
He moved closer to me.
“Get lost!” I shouted. Split second decision, I decided to head into the bushes, maybe to get him away from me.
Sadly his eyes followed me; they glowed in the dark.
The bear started toward me, and I mumbled, ” Dear God help me!”
Out of nowhere a young man appeared before the bear.
“Begone you! You don’t belong here. Your home is somewhere else. ”
The bear remained fixated in place.
“Go!” he shouted again.
The grizzly slowly strode away, tired of trying to mess with humans.
I emerged from the bushes and greeted the stranger.
He was quite taller than me with glasses, and sandy brown hair.
“Thank you, ” I said, shakily.
“You okay?” he asked concerned.
“Physically . . . ” I stuttered.
He started laughing.
“Yeah, grizzlies are pretty scary creatures. Thankfully they are scared of strong men like me. ”
After awhile he said, “Let me take you to your car.”
As if traveling through time, I stood in front of my jeep. He was beside me. I wasn’t surprised that the parking lot was completely empty.
“May I ask you your name?” I asked, grabbing out my cell phone from my backpack.
“Can’t, ” he answered with a little smile.
“Well, Helena, I better get going, ” he said about to leave.
“How do you know my name?” I asked.
“Looked it up in one of the files, ” he replied.
What he was saying made no sense.
“The files?” I said.
“Look forget about that. I need to go now, Helena.”
“Can I contact you?”
“Can’t, ” he said again.
“What is your job,” I inquired trying to find any sort of info on him.
“I guide travelers,” he said.
He disappeared, leaving me all alone.
I never forgot that day . . .
