Thanks to the authors, these writings prompted me to write down a few important questions that pass across my mind time and again.
Noted below are some answers to these questions in the following observations. I am giving out these as purely as personal views. They are not intended to criticize or offend anyone.
I hereby request the authors to permit me to use their articles as examples for my observations not intended to criticize or offend.
“ರವಿ ಕಾಣದ್ದನ್ನು ಕವಿ ಕಂಡ” |
I recall the saying in Kannada meaning “Poet saw what Sun could not see”. I feel the truth of this statement quite often when I read these writings.
Also I breath a fresh air unpolluted by the shackles of the norms and constraints placed by tradition in these writings, to get a vide open perspective of human imagination, though it’s too early to make such a sweeping statement by a beginner like me in the domain of literature.
A revisit to each of them
1 “Mosquitos” by Williams54
This is about surroundings of Adams and his dog Snoop, and a description of what he sees and experiences with mosquitoes. The author keeps reader unaware till the end that it was his dream that he underwent the experinces!
To quote an instance, in the lines “With silent whispers, they talk amongst themselves for a second, then the larger nymph raises one wing and in an instant, both Adam and Snoop vanish into the darkness without a sound.” look at the words “larger nymph raises one wing” show the microscopic action before the mosquito sits on an object, that it raises its wings to slow down! They clearly indicate his penchant for detail.
In a nutshell the story provides reader with a feast to his/her palate, a window to view what makes good writing.
2“Writing and Life” by Williams54
The author his observations on writing talent and what it takes to get one’s writings see the light of the day by the reader, not to speak little of the ordeal to get the writings published, the hurdles in getting the title “published author” . Talking about the various advises he received on his posts in the field of short stories and flash fiction, acknowledges the refinements in his writings he could achieve by adapting them, he delivers his excellent advise to aspiring writers saying “you have to ‘put yourself into the story you are writing’. Be a part of your characters. I call my characters my ‘actors’. Because when I write a story, I become so involved in my story that I ‘see’ what my actors are doing and I ‘feel’ what they are feeling. To get into my stories and be a part of the action, a part of the lives of my actors. Seeing myself on that spaceship or in the forest with the actor. Walking down the street or the dirt trail with the lost camper. To become part of what you are writing is crucial I think if you want to make a great story so folks will believe it. That’s what I believe”.
Above all the greatness of the writing lies in its masterly, golden advice “you have to ‘put yourself into the story you are writing” to budding writers entering the field. The zeal with which author extends his helping hand to one and all who are not exposed to writing field is commendable.
This is a detailed expression of a daughter who couldn’t perform to the expectation of a father who didn’t care to find the reason why she underperforms at school, he expects high performance and dislikes and doubts about her and her mother about their (interest?).When she gets it diagnosed at a very late age 25, it turns out to be a psychological disorder driving the victim to mood swings from hyperactive to low depressive ones. Had the father taken initiative to get it examined she could have had help , she laments, resulting in unhappiness.
In brief the author has given a great message “It is not enough if one keeps great expectations on child, but it is also equally or more important to analyse reasons for failures to achieve them to avert helpless situation that results in unhappiness”; a socially important message
4 “Adrift“ By Anon
This is about her ardent love she showers on her beloved in spite of numerous false promises, her aimless (blind) continuation of life under the illusion of happiness; expressing her goal to reach “the shores of the beloved she longs for” .The similes : numerous promises to a sea, and the raft on which she drifts to the embodiment of dreams, hopes, love and “the idea of happiness”, are used to depict her drift far away from the person she loves, using another simile, the shore .She further stresses the purpose of her drift is to love, attain her love no matter whatever be the hardship she faces. Finally she pleads with the reader not to tick all these off as “ a senseless babbling of a love struck fool,” and modestly says “you’d be right the love i have for my love is so great nothing in this world compares to it, and nothing ever will.”
To conclude author has forcefully expresses her feelings, longing for a sublime love, and gives a message that successful love entails many complex human emotions ,pain and patience to reach successful purpose.
5 “God sees, God knows” by William Holland
This story is about the elderly lady Katherine Whitfield, living alone in her cottage, worried about loneliness ,and life without any physical support after her beloved husband John’s death. She was liked by all in the community, except the greedy neighbor Lawson, who is expecting to buy her farm at a low cost and is waiting “for Katherine to pass away or move to the poor house so he could gain possession of her small farm and connect it with his own. “ The John couple had volunteered to adopt Calvin, an orphaned boy, many years after the death of their beloved son Jacob of fever at his age 7. Calvin a good boy close to parents had left them as he grew of age “to see the wonders of the world “ “With kisses, hugs and tears” though he kept contact with Katherine by a letter now and then. As grew old her loneliness brings in its vagaries, she had to limit down her activities, her well-wishers Ida and James couple, help her with shopping requirements and the like. Overwhelmed by her loneliness spends her life praying God to keep her in company of things she liked till her last breath. One fine day, “God sees” her , “knows” her plight ,much to her surprise her adopted son returns, with great success in life to keep support to her with a care taker.
In conclusion it is a touching story of importance described picturesquely bound to steal the hearts of those who have seen or experienced similar situation around them.
