In the beginning, there was light
I saw heavy double doors open and tempt me with it
checkered glimpses of it alternating
with the dark
Hands in half-shadows beckoning me within
Pulling me closer to the entrance
For years i had been waiting
in eager anticipation
Those doors were my salvation, the place i could
know my true self, become my true self
Inside that archway was the promise land
Where dreams flourish and freedom finds itself
Where lives begin and grow with vigor like flowers in bloom
Where I would start my ultimate journey
I counted down the months, weeks,
days, hours, and at last, minutes
The clock was almost done ticking but
My heart carried on the racing beat
My eager feet led me up to the doors
I wrapped sturdy fingers around the handle
Ready to fling it open and accept my destiny
My whole life was ahead of me, and
amazing things were about to happen
As it turns out, middle school was a little different than that.
