An invisible enemy lurks, unemotional and uncompromising. It has permeated our coverings like never before. Behind the cloth, fear, distrust, and incivility grow more rampant. The year is 2020 and we have squandered a tremendous opportunity.
We wear masks to protect ourselves. We think we are becoming more knowledgeable by the day. How could we be so blind? We avoid each others’ eyes. We think of our own interests. Our keyboards have become weaponized. Is there still time?
It grows later by the day. The old ways become more entrenched. Now is the time, today, this moment. There is no greater sickness than apathy, no more dangerous symptoms than anger and inaction. We must don new masks, new protection.
Let them be masks of kindness, of charity, of action. Let us join together today to make our communities better places, one small step at a time. Every deed, every act, every small step matters. The hungry, the weary, the bitter, the depressed, and the defeated grow greater by the hour. Let our new masks of human dignity and fraternity be donned every day.
