People always say I’m better than a lot of people.
That may sound snobby, and I mean it in the best way.
Of course, I value their opinions, but I wish I was better than one single person…
Myself.
I wish I was better than myself.
I wish I was better than my expectations.
I wish I was better than my fears.
I wish I was better than my thoughts that creep into my head.
I wish I didn’t have those thoughts.
I wish I could stop degrading others to make myself feel better.
I wish I was better.

This is a very powerful poem that I think a lot of people will be able to relate to. It touches on the immense pressure that we put on ourselves. Oftentimes, it is true that we are our own biggest critics. Even when people are telling us how great we are, we can’t help but feel like a failure. We know our potential, and we know that we can always do better. You did a great job of coherently expressing these emotions, so that others know that they are not alone.
Thank you so much for your feedback and I’m glad you like it!
Goodness, this takes unbelievable courage to admit. I think we always want to be better than ourselves because we know we’re looking at the true circumstances. When other people compliment or give praise to us it can seem undeserved because they can only see the image we put out there. Easier said than done and I’m about to be 100% hypocritical, but if we present ourselves as we actually are, then comments others make are guaranteed to be authentic and help us improve – removing the skewed perceptions factor – or your money back.
The honesty in this piece is significant, so awesome job.
Thank you so much! I’m glad you like it, you make a good point!
