It is that time of year, one I hold so high and dear!
My heart is stirred to give gifts of joy, and to lift spirits with cheer!
I walk about my streets with a smile, for everyone to see
But I am met with a frown, as if they be disgusted at my glee
I go about my job in the marketplace,
With the same shining, sparkly smile on my face
I look about, and see the stress of bustling bodies
Hurrying to and fro, to buy obligated gifts for everybody
My spirit wonders: “What is your point for celebrating”?
“If you are buying gifts for the festivities, why is it irritating”?
I feel like its the very cursed marketplace I work in, that cursed the holiday,
Cursed it with the sole lure of getting riches, soiled its bright colors with gray!
Can’t you see, my friends old and new! This isn’t happiness!
This isn’t a celebration! It has turned into an annual time of toil and sadness!
The market has usurped the sacred time, has claimed the festival’s throne!
It beckons every mind-poisoned man: “More you must own! More you must own!”
It will erode! It will rust! It will rot!
The trinkets we adore to receive, it will perish; they are things of naught!
Why celebrate something so shallow and mundane?
And dance around things of charm, things that make us vain?
This is why I wear this sunny grin,
To remind the world that there is more about this, deep within
All we need is to journey back to the manger low,
To look into our frozen hearts, and ignite the Divine glow
The One Who lays here will be with us forever!
No shop can sell anything to compare, no craft so clever!
All you need is to bow before Him, and in your heart, your sins grieve
This one will give you eternal bliss, all you need to do is BELIEVE.
