It was amazing just how quickly your life could change. Mine changed when I met him. It changed in the greatest possible way, I found him when I was at my lowest. It wasn’t always great with him, there were a lot of times filled with pain, but pain is sometimes needed in growth. I believe it made us all that much stronger. No matter what, I’ll always be able to call him my closest friend.
My life had recently spiraled downhill, I had no job, and I had gone through the worst breakup of my lifetime. Nothing seemed to be looking up for me, and each passing day got grayer. I had lost my spark. Even moving to a new city for a new start had gone wrong, it just made me feel lonely. I was always surrounded by people, on the subway, in the streets, everywhere you went was bustling with people. But I had never felt more alone in my life.
I suppose I was lost in thought at the time, staring into a now empty milkshake i was eating in a food court at the mall. I was surrounded by people, but I hadn’t even noticed him until he was standing directly in front of me.
“Hey.” He said. “Is everything alright? I just saw you sitting here alone and you kinda looked down..”
“No, I’m okay… I mean, I guess I’ve been better, my boyfriend actually broke up with me yesterday and.” I stopped mid sentence. I’ve never opened up to a stranger like this. I never even got too emotional around my friends. “I’m sorry, you don’t want to hear my sob story.”
He chuckled a bit and pulled out the chair across from me, taking a seat. “No, it’s okay. I did come over here to see if you were alright.”
“Yeah, I don’t know too many people that would approach a stranger just to check on them.” A smile began to grow on her face. “Thanks, it actually means a lot to me.”
“It’s no problem. So what are you doing here all alone?” He questioned.
Just like that I was engaged in a very lengthy conversation with some strange boy. He showed me nothing but genuine kindness, he was like a light in my constantly gray world, and suddenly things seemed to gain their color again. I wish I could remember and relive every moment of that conversation, I never want to forget a single moment, because that’s the day I met Colby.
Colby was the sun in my life, always shining and filling my world with his laughter. I wish I could have learned how important he was to me sooner. I would have saved myself so much heartbreak. He taught me to love myself again, I never told him so, but he saved me from myself.
