A man walked a rocky path
and found himself beside
a river flowing deep and north.
He wondered where to stride.
Out came a fox, a clever fox
who wished the man a “Hi”.
The fox asked the man why pause entailed
for the man could not reply.
The man looked at the fox and at the river.
He felt himself to have a shiver.
The fox asked the man where his future go
the man knew not but knew his flow.
The man asked the fox what he might do
if he were to find a river with no canoe.
The fox told the man he always leaps,
for a fox without bravery is no fox to keep.
He reminded the man the wisdom of wit,
“Should you jump the river, make sure you don’t hit.
For a man with courage is a strong man indeed.
Yet a courageous man with no wisdom is a dead man foreseen.”
