Any good work of art acts as a mirror held up to the people who comprise the very society that work of art was created within. More often than not we suppress the parts of ourselves which may not seem ethically sound. These are the topics which get explored without filter. Bringing them into the light for all to see. Often misinterpreted, and always polarizing; these works hold the society they were created within accountable. Works of good art are often hard to spot, taking some time for society itself to change in order for the cultural vantage point to gain some distance from it self. History only works upon looking back at events. Like standing to close to a large image, it is hard to digest it’s full importance. “What does a fish know of the water in which it swims”, says Einstein. The time delay which takes place between the worlds of Fine Art and that of the larger cultural population is somewhere around 80 years. Only in 2018 do we see museum goers appreciating abstraction from the 1940’s. Picasso is fully embraced. Yet minimalism is still considered suspect. An inside joke poking fun at the non art educated viewers who are missing something. I imagine Donald Judd’s works will become highly influential in the museum displays and architecture of the 2040’s.

I feel like minimalism really gets a bad wrap. It’s like if something isn’t overloading our senses, it’s not worth our time.
