One day God said to me I will bless you for a while with these puppies, To love you every day while they live For twelve or thirteen or fourteen or fifteen years, Promise to take good care of them Playfulness and silly acts Will hearten you Love, they only know How to give it away unconditionally Each has an innate sense That lets them know when your sad or ill Then, like stoic guardians they’ll jump to attention Each will nuzzle up Cuddle you Staying until you’re ready Oh! there will be Times of growls or ignoring you or causing mischief Wanting you to give chase Not coming when called Never be Annoyed Just like you Each wants to express Their individual personality Like all puppies they’ll see you before you see them Loyalty, they know, each has sworn An oath to take care of you A watchful eye is always on you When the time comes For them to go back to heaven Your tears will seem to never end Nothing, you say, will ever fill the void God hear my plea Please just one more day A stay, God said, I cannot give But as solace for your loss To ease your grief I’ll gift to you, Memories Of magical, never-ending joyful puppy filled days One day God, too, will nudge me Telling me it’s time for eternal rest Buddy, Holly, Kramer - I make this heartfelt promise Whenever I’m out just taking a stroll I’ll recall one of our many walks and relive that day again Holly close at my side and Buddy/Kramer jockeying to lead Until we are all together once again.
