Each Year Before Father’s Day
By: Katina Buchanan
Yesterday, I looked in the mirror,
And saw an image of his smile.
Made him glad just for me to sit up tall,
I felt happy even for a while.
Yestermorning, I fried two eggs,
With butter-apple jammed toast, yes–two sugars and no cream.
I was everything in him,
No longer an adolescent dream.
Yesternoon, I thought, only thought
To make another Hello call.
It’s me I got so tied up,
But you’d understand it all.
Yesterevening, I seem to do this same,
I said, the day before the day.
It’s in the mail,
I feel so eager to say.
Yesternight, I did wonder how much,
Was left to me, by the way.
Oh Lord, what kind of thought,
Is that each year the day before Father’s Day.
