Chapter One. Roslyn.
Hunter cleared his throat and looked into each of our eyes.
“I’m sorry” He murmured and then stepped out of the room. Lucas looked liked he was going to murder him and Addie looked like she was going to too. I knew I felt it.
This boy was a last hope of staying in the area in the city to complete the mission and he rolled over. I wanted to spit on everything, but then they have my DNA and they’d track us. I kept repeating that in my head till the thought ended up in the back of my mind. Instead I focused on Addie who’s face looked devilish at the moment. Her lips were almost white because of how hard she pressed them together and she had a sly face.
“I’m leaving” Addie glared at the door, swung it open, and then slammed it closed with a loud bang. Seconds later you could hear glass shattered.
“Me too” I murmured hoping Addie had broken and wasn’t valuable enough for him to call soldiers on us.There weren’t many places to go so we needed to leave quickly before anything escalated
“You know I follow you two” Lucas swung his bag onto his shoulders and we left the room like we’d never been there. I kicked the front step of the giant brick home. I yelped slightly and then stomped with Addie and Lucas away downtown. After a few blocks we headed into a bar and quickly took the contacts out leaving us with our natural eye color.
“Wake up!” Lucas was shaking my arm. I slapped him and crawled out from under the dumpster. Addie was softly snoring across the rode under the other dumpster. Last night’s argument repeated in my mind. I just wanted to forget it and pretend we weren’t just with Hunter but he was pretty unforgettable.
I knew Addie would hold a grudge on him even longer than she has with anyone. Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if she had us go start a fire in the home and quite frankly I didn’t object to the idea. He played us and gave us two hours to get far enough away before he called the soldiers on us.
“Addie?” I looked at Lucas for something. Even when she was sleeping anger was radiating off of her. Her lips were pressed in a hard line and her nose was still scrunched up. Her tiny hands were still in fist like she was going to punch someone.
“She’s gonna be really pissed this morning. She was up late last night” Lucas rolled his eyes with annoyance and helped me up.
“Then why don’t you wake her up” I smiled sarcastically. He looked at me surprised and then smiled.
“Nope” He made a popping sound on the p and then headed down the alley looking around. I sighed and walked over to her.
“Addie?” I shook her lightly on the shoulder and then stepped back just in time for her fist to come flying out from under the dumpster.
“Meh” She rolled out and stood up like she wasn’t asleep twenty seconds ago.
“Let’s get going, the troops will be looking soon.” I pulled her down to the street where Lucus was.
“Where’re we going?” Lucas looked at Addie. She pointed west down the road here we had just left.
“Not there” She moaned and we followed her east down the crowded road. We quickly gathered the few things we had and entered the crowd.
“Chocolate?” Someone asked. More people started to get out and set up their stands.
“Fresh beer!” Someone else was swinging a wine glass out splattering it everywhere. Some people yelled at him but didn’t make much ruckus to attract the soldiers.
“Hello!” A man around twenty nodded at me. I rolled my eyes in disgust as we shoved through the crowds.
“Let’s get out of the crowd” I murmured and tugged on their shirts to follow me through the alley. Sirens started to blare in the distance.
“He reported us!” Lucus looked at us. Addie was red and looked like she was going to scream. She quickly swore under her breath instead and looked at us for options. We started to jog toward the other side of the alley to get to the road and blend with a crowd. Soldiers were walking through the crowds now with their guns out. I snatched a scarf from a woman walking by and wrapped it around my face practically hiding my nose and mouth so they couldn’t use a scanner on me. Addie was already doing the same thing. Lucas snatched a coat from a vendor dropping his other one in the trash a block down and handed us his bag while he slid it on. No one noticed because everyone was staring at the soldiers.
“We are looking for Abby May, Luke Touring and Lynn Mine,” one soldiers yelled. I rolled my eyes at the new names we had. We never told Hunter are real names, but rather a name that sounded close enough. We changed them almost every time we traveled so we knew when someone turned on us.
“Screw hunter” Addie kicked a stone and hung her head with us. Everyone was scurrying away from the soldiers and heading into the stores. We walked a few more blocks east and then entered an abandoned building and started running up the stairs. There was trash on the floor and glass shattered everywhere but it would work.
“The scumbag reported us for a few coins” I muttered.
“Captain” Soldiers helped a salute up.
“We need to leave the city before the block exits” Lucas looked at us. We weren’t in great shape after we broke into the hospital for medicine but we were better then we had been in a few months. Normally we’d hide around for a while but a Captain was involved. That meant we had really caused them trouble that was worth doing something about. That or this Captain was new and wanted us as a badge for his first successful mission.
“Roslyn, where should we go?” Addie watched me as I pulled the wallet grabbed from some men on the street out from under my coat. She mimicked my a few feet away.
“We have enough money to leave here,” I counted the cash and then stuffed it into the pocket inside my coat. “Besides when we were in his house we had wigs and hoods on so I don’t think they have any real photos of us” I thought about watching all the cameras in the house.
“My leg hurts” Addie moaned and stretched her legs out.
“Same spot” I looked at the bullet wound she got a few nights ago. It was a lot better but it started to look infected which wasn’t good. If we got nabbed on the street and the soldiers saw it they might think she was the one who broke into the hospital. Or they could think she was a runaway. Both would come with some bad consequences. We huddled in the back near the exit and passed around the little bag of crackers and a soda Lucas snatched on our way here.
After a few minutes Lucas pulled out a bottle of alcohol and motioned for Addie to pull her pant leg up so he could pour it on the bullet wound. She groaned slightly but agreed knowing that she needed it to get better. Lucas poured the alcohol on it as she kicked slightly moaning. I could tell she was trying to be brave and not make a sound. Then Lucas started to examine and work with the medical supplies we gathered from the hospital to heal it. Addie moaned as we got up but didn’t complain.
We started heading East again after we cut through a bunch more streets so we couldn’t be followed easily. The nice thing about this part of town was no one paid any attention to you as long as you didn’t pay attention to them and the streets were crowded leavin plenty of room to slip in and out of. We separated after a few blocks when soldiers started coming through.
“Have you seen a trio including two girls and a boy. They should be together. One has green eyes, tan and blonde hair. The other girl had brown eyes, dirty blond hair and is darker toned. The boy has yellow eyes and freckles. If you see them please report it. Five hundred coins for telling us were they are” by now the descriptions were completely off but it was better to not be together. We headed on our separate roads that led to the river. A I walked down the road I could feel someone staring at me but I ignored it and continued to walk by. After a few blocks I pretended to window shop like some of the rich girls. This area of downtown was rich so I had to snatch so many different clothes and change into something that looked fancy as I walked down the road.
I was only a few blocks away from the river now. I had to turn left at the giant skyscraper that held the info board that fed into the road Lucas was on. I was about to turn when the info board suddenly brightened and a Captain by the looks of it started to talk.
“Hello! I am your brave Captain Tanily” I rolled my eyes at his boast ego but pretended to be engaged like everyone around me.
“Today I sadly have to report that one of the King’s nephews was attacked and his mother’s glass tone was destroyed by three kids.” The rich children around me gasped in horror. I pretended to care and opened my mouth wide like the little brats around me.
“Crap” I muttered. Why did you have to break that Addie.
Even though I knew she had no care for the kid, couldn’t she have broken something else. The glass tone was probably the only thing in that house that could be recreated with no problem, but she chose the one thing that couldn’t be replaced. Hostely I would have broken that too, but still.
The glass tone was something every girl makes when they take their faction test. It is a vase they put notes of their life in. The tone holds all the girls’ feelings while they take their faction test. The man that chooses them reads the notes and then the tone is kept in memory of the girl’s name. The faction test quizzes your brain, body and everything else about you. The King decided these tests were only for girls because they were too annoying for boys. That was why the tone’s were created. So boys could feel sympathy for the girls who had to take the test because boys were so supiro they couldn’t feel that pain. Ugh.
I personally think it was just a way for him to survey the worth of all girls and put them against each other. It basically decided what you could do with your life and then made a group of boys you could marry. The problem was that in every group of boys there were multiple girls in the group too which meant they had to fight for the man.
Ultimately it was the man’s choice but it still made no sense. There were a few ways to fail and a few ways to over succeed. If you succeed the test with flying colors you would be put in the group with a prince as your beloved. You fail if you don’t show any physical attraction or if the King and soldiers think you aren’t with the time.
Your score really was based off of your wealth because no man would marry a poor girl. I failed the test because my parents lived in the poor sector that the faction test placed them in. They died six years ago. Addie and I took the test the day before they died.
We were neighbors. Now we’re sisters. I had a brother but he was more attractive to the King when he was ten, apparently, so he got placed in a home with a rich family. I was five and we really didn’t understand or really know each other that well. I haven’t seen him sense. Lucas has been the makeshift brother.
“These are the pictures that we have of them” The Captain interrupted my anger with her showing pictures of us with different clothes and eye colors in. Addie also had a fake spray tan on so that would change some over her parents in a week.
“Unfortunately the camera footage of when the left was destroyed. Half a million coins for however finds them” I smirked for a split second. Rich bratty boy. Half a million coins could buy you an island and a good life with it. I only had fifteen hundred and that was going to be enough to get us out of here. He was so spoiled. A truck pulled into the street I was going to use to connect back to Addie and Lucas. Soldiers were pouring out of it with their guns in the air.
“Hello”I sweetly smiled at him. He smiled back like he was going to flirt with me and put his hand out for mu ID. I pulled a fake one that looked enough like me now and handed it to him.
“Rose?” He looked between me and the photo. He kissed my cheek handed me a card so I could get through the rest of the soldiers and walked off. I pretended to look after him for a few seconds and then walked forward keeping the card he handed me out like the rest of the rich girls.
