Dr. Morris wasn’t thrilled with his new assignment, he was staring out the window of the tiny plane that was taking him to his ‘new home’ for the next few months.
The giant island of Greenland is where he will live and work for who knew how long. He viewed it as punishment for the report that he put out on his studies of the swamps of Louisiana and east Texas, which went against the current beliefs of the bureaucrats at the USGS.
The site of the frozen landing strip and nothing but snow on the ground did nothing to soothe his increasing anxiety. “Why is the USGS doing any work in a territory of Denmark?” Morris asked himself the rhetorical question as the plane landed. He didn’t expect the pilot to hear it or even care.
Morris didn’t enjoy his ride from the small airport, if that is what it was called, to the little research facility half way up the western slope of a mountain, the jeep had a weak heater and no suspension to speak of.
It felt to him like all he could see is white and gray in every direction. He felt desolate inside just like his surroundings.
