Emeril Lagasse, a chef known for the enthusiastic catch phrases he uses on his cooking show, gained a new fan in the fall of 2001. A young girl started watching his show all the time.
Was she aspiring to be a chef? Did she have a passion for cooking? No, she really didn’t care much for cooking, nor was she greatly interested in food. She had another reason.
She had lost her father to the attack on the Twin Towers in New York City on September 11th. In the aftermath, it seemed like every time she turned on the TV there was some reminder of that day and all that had happened. Even Animal Planet was airing stories about the search and rescue dogs that were being utilized in the aftermath.
No, she wasn’t particularly interested in cooking. She watched Emeril’s show because he was entertaining, but primarily because he never mentioned 9/11. The show became her escapism.
