Even now at the end of the day when all seemed to be finished and she might finally relax into the cushions that peace still eluded her. Her back remained stiff, her face tight, and her mind stuck in an endless pattern of remembering. Her dress was too constrictive, not like the ones she used to wear. The tight knot of her hair was beginning to give her a headache. She always used to wear it loose. She used to do a lot of things before. Before she grew old. Before she became so tired. Before she lost him.
She could see his grin now as he laughed at her formal attire. She thinks she would have laughed with him. They would have giggled across the room at each other like two young fools without a care of their appearance. Then after their laughter had subsided and their audience fully captivated they would have swept from sight. Out through the kitchens and towards their one haven. Running through the forest; her hair blowing behind them and catching the falling, faded leaves within the tresses.
Yes, he would have found much entertainment in her now. Sitting stiffly in the bright armchair, wearing her best gown and her hair adding a few inches to her height. He would have said Why bother pretending? You know you were meant for the forest. For me. Once upon a time she thought those words were prophetic. That nothing could ever truly separate them. They were one person. One soul. One body. Nothing could take him from her or her from him. Of course, nothing seemed more powerful then believed it was exactly that, that stole him from her side.
A black emptiness that swept over his mind and destroyed the man she loved. The cloud that descended on him did not have a name. No one could say exactly what was wrong. No one could say anything. And so, she could only watch as a dark nothing carried him away just as she can only sit here now with the memory of that shadowy cloud seeping into every shred of her being.
