A lonely ship
sails the sea,
without a compass
it has no way
home.
In the town
people are waiting.
Waiting for the ship
that will never arrive.
They have high hopes,
but it is those aboard
the ship
who truly need
all that
hope.
The captain squints,
trying to see through
the storm.
The rain splashes
on his face,
which is a
pleasant change
from all the sun.
But the waves are big
they are massive
the ship’s hull cracks
as does the peoples’ hearts.
For now, there is surely no way
home.

I love this! I think that sometimes the metaphor of a dream never reached could be trite but you crafted it in a way that is so unique and lovely. The equating of dreams and hope with home is the perfect parallel because at times all those places we want to reach is just one: home. Thanks for this!
Thank you for reading!
What a heartfelt poem that can be interpreted to be many situations. But, today, I feel “the boat” represents our country, being swallowed by enormous waves of division. The biggest waves imaginable since The Civil War that nearly blew our great country asunder. The captain (the government) cannot see the way home to carry on the “more perfect union” imagined by our founding fathers “with liberty and justice for all.” The founding fathers left documents to lead the way forward for future generations, but in 2019, the genius of their vision is barely audible, just barely above a whisper even. The noise is loud and distracting. The waves, the wind, the panicked crew makes the captain unable to navigate. Hearts break as it appears the ship may go down under the immense pressure of these waves of discontent, hatred, and division which seem insurmountable. The long exalted American Experiment is about to go under the weight of the waves. Indeed, heartbreaking! There is no going home!
Wow, that’s such an interesting connection! When I was writing this I really was just writing random words that came to my head, but what you said gives it such a good meaning!
