“I AM”
by Kaneesha Brown
Bold bright red lips
But soft spoken
Lined brown eyes
Egypt
3,000 miles to the east
Her hair lays on my shoulders in bundles
Painted even
Roots beneath this foundation
He picks the pedals away
He loves me
He loves me not I chant in my mind
Snipping at this blanket I put over me
I cannot hide
The vulnerability in this nakedness exceeds my comfort
The weeds protrude from my scalp
Nude lips
Brown shades leading up to the borders of my oval outline
No shadow to conceal these dark circles
His eyes beam upon me
I AM
I exist
And some how…
he finds beauty in it all.

A slight typo: “Can not” is “Cannot.” I find this poem very interesting and want to look more closely at it. I’m conflicted, but certain. These are the feelings I’m getting from your poem. It’s interesting that the speaker is cutting a blanket, but still finds comfort in their lover.
Thank you. I will make the correction! I appreciate your feedback.
