If someone asked me what I wanted
It would be complete happiness and peace
If someone asked me what I wanted
It would be to be set free
It would be to have joy on the inside
That shined so bright
It would show so much on the outside
That all would know I’m alright
If someone asked me what I wanted
I would say this, that and so much
If someone asked me what I wanted
It would be that one powerful touch
I need someone, something—a friend
I need all things from the master’s hand
I need that friend with me until the end
I need that friend to help me stand
If someone asked me what I wanted
I would say to be completely free
If someone asked me what I wanted
I would say to continue being me

This is awesome! It read like a Dr. Seuss poem in my head for adult for some reason. I think that beautiful yet simple rhyme, which Dr. Seuss mastered so beautifully, was resonant here. I think that this poem has all the elements that makes for happiness. Not only do you directly mention those emotions in the poem, but it also shines bright with keys to being happy which is to surround yourself with people who genuinely love you and to always be unapologetically yourself. That idea, so contradicting yet so complementary, is happiness and the title and the motif of “if someone asked me” becomes ironic as you become the primary agent.
Thank you so much Anna
I really enjoyed reading your poem. It is powerful and touches on a very interesting idea. It is true that even while surrounded by such a materialistic culture, the things that we desire are often simple and nonmaterialistic. Humans naturally crave companionship, happiness, freedom, and peace. These are the things that are most important to us, but oftentimes are the hardest things to get.
thank you.
