Chapter 5
The following morning Alic and I had Anne drive us to the ferry, she greeted her boyfriend as we boarded the ferry our bags in hand, “You two have fun and don’t get into too much trouble.” Anne said. We found a seat and relaxed as we waited to leave. The ride was beautiful, and I loved seeing the coastline. Once the ferry was out of sight of the dock Alic took my hand in his, I looked up at him. “I like you.” I was startled, “You do? How long have you liked me?” He smiled, “Since the day you trip over your own feet and fell into my sister’s birthday cake.” “That was over a year ago!” “I know, but you have never shown interest in me. I thought maybe you liked a guy at school, and I was in college. So, I decided to wait. I thought I didn’t like you anymore, but after we got to know each other on the plane, I thought why not see if you liked me.” “We have been in Greece for a month! You haven’t said anything about liking me.” He gave me one of those looks that made my knees go week, “I have been trying for a month to tell you, but every time I get close to you, you run away.” I looked down at the water, I had been running away, “I thought I was seeing into something that wasn’t there. I thought there was no way you could like me as anything other than your little sister’s best friend.” Alic reached out and turned my head toward him gently, “Elizabeth, you are the smartest women I know and yet you thought I couldn’t or wouldn’t like you? For the past year and a half, I have been waiting for you to graduate so your parents wouldn’t think you were too young to date a guy in college.” I stared at him mouth open in surprise not sure what you say.
After a moment he asked, “Are you alright?” I nodded my head, “You like me, like me?” He chuckled, “Yes I like you, like you.” Looking back, I wish I would have said something different. But being the 18-year-old kid, I was who had never had a guy tell her he liked her, and it was the guy I had had a crush on since… well… forever I said, “Why?” Alic smiled and hugged me, “Because, you are you. You are smart, kind, you never let me win at chess, and you love history and old things.” He pulled back and looked me in the eyes, “You are more beautiful than any woman I have or ever will meet.” A tear rolled down my cheek, “Liz, are you crying.” I shook my head, “I like you too, I just never thought you would like me.” “So, you’re not sad?” He asked, I shook my head, “No, I’m happy.” He beamed at me, his golden eyes lighting up, “I have one more confession to make… I have been planning this little side trip to Athens since we got here.” “You have? When did you?” “Remember that day you and Anne went to the spa?” I nodded, “What if I would have said I don’t like you?” He smiled, “Then I would have let you know its ok and we can just be friends.”
