In The Night: Prologue

The Aftermath: The Next Afternoon
James McCray couldn’t believe he got the chance to become a medic. Although he had a very thin build, he passed all the tests.
His boots made a crunch sound as he traversed through Dresden’s ruins. He wouldn’t dare go back to his fellow soldiers, who were at a falling down home nearby. So he stayed walking ahead, surveying the rubble by himself.
Then he saw something up ahead.
He felt ash float upon his dusty blonde hair.
” Hey, Richard, come look at this!” he yelled as loud as he could.
Soon enough, thudding of matching boots creep from behind.
” What? Oh my-” muttered Roger in disbelief.
There before them knelt a little girl, her hair mostly burnt and her skin blistered, yet she remained upright.
” How can this happen?” asked Roger, whispering, as if he would awaken her from a deep sleep.
” Providence is the only answer I can come up with, ” answered James.
” And look her hands are fixed for prayer.”
And so James and Roger lifted the little girl into their arms and carried her to the medic truck.

This whole story gave me so many emotions! I love this extra part at the end. It is obviously sad, but also powerful. Thanks for sharing!
