Chapter one: Noticing the Small Things
Today in Honors English we had to take a quiz on what we have learned the year before. It was just all about American literature and writing skills. It was easy, I guess. When I finished, I forgot to bring a book, I didn’t know what we were going to do. So, I decided to look around the class for a couple minutes. May have been creepy, but I wanted to get a feel for the room, and the people.
There were a few people I recognized. There was this girl I remember from my elementary school. I think her name was something like Kylie or Tylie. Something with a “Ylie”. She was always in the musicals. And then there was Lukas Squire. He was kind of a crack head. Don’t know what’s up with him now.
And then when I looked back to “look at the clock,” I saw my childhood friend. Well, friend might be too much. He was my neighbor when I lived with my parents. My mom would take me over to his house sometimes. His name was Steven. We used to always call him Stevey. After I moved, I never talked to him again. I mean I was six, what was I going to do. Luckily, I still went to the same school. I had already been in first grade and made some “friends” my Ya-ya thought. So she thought that I should still go to the schools I were to go to if I was still living with my parents. But it didn’t matter, Steven and I weren’t in the same class. Somehow, we didn’t even go to the same lunch or recess.
After all of the thinking my teacher, Ms. Pugmire, interrupted the awkward silence, “Okay class, it’s the first day of school, I know it kind of sucks. So, let’s make this fun.” Great, she’s one of those teachers. The one that wants to be your friend more than your teacher. She does look pretty young, 23 or 25.
“As you know, I’m Ms. Pugmire. This is my second-year teaching. I decided to be an English teacher, because… ha, I hate Math. And I’m not married yet, but it’s complicated.” she would breath in and out. Then she opened her eyes realizing what she just said.
“I’m sorry about that. Forget I said that Um, so let’s get to know more about you guys.” She closed her eyes and moved her arms pointing around then stopped on the girl that sat across from me. “you!”
“Oh. Um.” she said while she stood up, “I’m Iris McQuoid. I moved here from New York. We moved her to Boston because of my dad’s work. I’m glad I moved here though, fresh start.” there was a moment when she was thinking about what to say. “Oh, and the history.”
I could tell she was a bit shy; it is the first day of school. She was also confident and loud. All the things I wish I could be. She was gray wearing pants, a white shirt and a cardigan. Somehow, I could tell that’s not her style. Her hair was a dark brown with red highlights. It was nothing I have seen before. Her skin was pale like snow. I never thought of liking someone on the first day of school, or even paying attention to a girl so much.
“Thank you, Iris. I hope I remember that. Sorry if I forget you name.” after she checked the clock behind me, “looks like we have one minute. You guys can start packing up. Don’t gather by the door okay!”
I picked up my computer and then my pencil fell of the table. I set my computer down again and then I went to get my pencil or the floor. In the corner of my mind I heard someone say “hey, I’ll get that.”
I was pretty sure it was just another conversation but as I reach down to get my pencil, I saw a hand reach for it too. We touch hands and then I looked up to see Iris looking me in the face. And one thing I didn’t notice before was her eyes. They were beautiful. They had patches of different shades bright blue and yellow. But yet she had streaks of grey. All mixing together to make a gorgeous mix of light green. Nothing I have ever seen before. Not like I look at eyes in my free time.
“Sorry.” she said while pulling her hand away from the floor. She had had a slight smile to her lips with a giggle to her tone. Her voice, as before, was calming. I could listen to it all day.
I grabbed the pencil from the ground. There was a second of silence. But to me, it wasn’t weird or awkward. “It’s okay. T-thanks though.” I said while we started standing up.
“I’m Iris, as you know.”
“I’m Xander.” I said right before the bell rang.
“I’ll see you later Xander.”
“yeah, I’ll see you.”
