Chapter 3
“Well, no, I don’t have any proof…I don’t care what she said she told me…Well come on now youre not going to even check?….I understand. You have a good day as well.”
Jack hung up the phone and sighed. He couldn’t believe how ineffective the law enforcement system was. He had just spent the last hour trying to get ahold of someone who would listen. He had asked two days ago about Brian’s disappearance to the police. They asked his mother and she simply said he was out of town. That was it. That was all they could do. She had TOLD him Brian was dead. Brian deserved better than to be forgotten. People had to at least notice he was dead!
Jack had been pacing for a good hour while Elizabeth was doing some paperwork from the hospital. She was a nurse and had needed to cover one of her friends who were going through some personal problems. She kept glancing up at jack as he paced. She knew that he would talk if he needed to. All she needed to do was wait for when he was ready and he would make his case. Jack was like that. When he was passionate or distressed hed think about it for the longest time before finally bursting with a very logical and very convincing argument as to why this outrage was horrible.
It was, however, getting late. As she neared the bottom of her pile of paperwork she began to wonder if he was going to present before she had to go to bed. After all, she worked the morning shift and had to get up early. As much as she loved her husband, she simply had to get sleep or shed be dead at work.
“I don’t understand their logic.” he said finally. Elizabeth perked her head up to show she was listening.
“Whose?” she said
“The police. It’s clear that something sketchy is going on in Brian’s household and all they have to confirm Brian’s alive is his mother’s statement that he went on a trip. No idea where no idea when he’ll be back. Nothing. But then they just sit on that? Dont they care if he’s alive?” Jack didn’t stop pacing.
“Im sure they do. But they have limitations, rules.”
“What good are those rules when nothing gets done?” Jack seemed agitated. “It seems like there not even trying.”
“There’s nothing we can do about it.” she said.
“Well there should be.” Jack said. “Maybe hire a private detective?”
“One. Those are expensive. Two. have those ever actually worked?”
“Fair point.” Jack seemed frustrated. “But we have to do something.”
“The only person who can do anything is Brain’s mother.” Elizabeth stood up and kissed Jack. “You need to let this go.”
Rylie had just gotten home from work. Cassius was very happy to be home and off his leash he immediately did a once over the entire apartment at light speed then came crashing like a comet onto his fluffy bed. He seemed very content laying there.
Rylie smiled. Then she called out. “Andrew! You home?”
There wasn’t a response. He was probably working late. He had been doing that recently. She wondered why. She hadn’t checked the finances in awhile but last time she looked they were booming. Andrew shouldn’t be having any emergency.
She tried to shrug it off but the thought was in her head now. What was going on?
She went into the office, a small room with a comfy office chair, a computer and a high quality webcam. Rylie, being paranoid, unconsciously turned the webcam upwards so it wasnt pointed at her. She sat down behind the computer and typed in there password.
All the paychecks were in order all locations were paid and all the owners were paying them back. Rylie stared at the numbers for a minute. Something wasn’t right with there own paycheck.
August 2019: $[7,784.54]
September 2019: $7,823.23
October 2019: $7,992.11
November 2019: $8,023.43
December 2019: $8,023.43
January 2020: $8,023.43
February 2020: $8,023.43
March 2020: $8,023.43
April 2020: $8,023.43
Then it snapped. Over the last 6 months their paycheck hadn’t increased at all. That was weird. She tried to look for why, looking for any projects that were taking money. It looked like other projects were also getting issues. There were several listed complaints, which hadn’t reached her at all. The only project opened in the last 6 month was under a file labeled GENERATION. But upon trying to access it she found a separate password. She tried there usual password. Denied. She tried one of Andrews lesser used passwords. Denied. Out of desperation she typed: Password.
Nothing.
This was getting more confusing by the minute.
“She didn’t give you anything else?” Andrew asked.
Jack was sitting in his favorite chair. He loved to come in and just relax after work. Maybe spend some time with his best friend. It was a good relaxing time before Elizabeth got home. Some time that him and andrew just had to themselves. But this particular day he wasn’t very relaxed.
“Yeah. She came in, said he had died.” he put his fingers to his temples to try and reveal some of the pressure. “She mentioned some of her friends told her not to tell the police.”
“And she listened?” Andrew said.
“Yeah. I put in a tip to the police but they can’t do anything because she says that he’s just on vacation. It’s been a week and unless she confesses then they wont do anything.”
“Weird.”
“Right? Like, who would listen to their friends in that situation? It seems so clear cut you know?” Jack wasn’t even sure if it was legal for him to talk about. That was part of the reason he hadn’t talked to andrew sooner.
“Maybe it’s not.” Andrew said. He took a swig of pop before continuing. “You mentioned this guy had shady friends?”
“You think it’s some kind of gang?”
“The kind of friends you don’t say no to?” Andrew said.
“You know maybe.” Jack thought about it. “It’s definitely likely. If he was doing some kind of work for the gangs to pay for his family, it’d make sense they wouldn’t want a police investigation into his death.”
“Well that’s one possibility. What are we going to do about it?” Andrew asked.
“What do you mean?” Jackson was confused.
“I mean, the police wont do anything. His family wont do anything so what will we do?”
“I don’t know what you man. This doesn’t seem like much of our business…”
“You seriously going to sit back and let this kid go without so much as a whisper?” Andrew leaned back. “Seems a little cruel if you ask me.”
“Why cruel?”
“Because the only people who give a crap are sitting on the butts just speculating.” Andrew looked Jack in the eye. “Speculating wont do this kid any good.”
“What would you have me do?” Jack said, shaking his head. Andrew had a way of just…doing what he said he would. Even the things that normal people wouldn’t take seriously.
“Well I know when I get a client they have to write down their address. Do you do the same?”
“Yes. but I can’t just go to their house that’d be abusing customers.”
“First. If these guys are shady then i doubt they’ll call the police. Second its an ex-customer.”
Jack thought about it. This whole thing was keeping him from getting a good night’s sleep, maybe just talking to them would help.
“Alright fine.”
