Coffee and canceled flights
Sitting in a cafe
Or a hotel room
You see her
Walking down the street
A sad look in her eyes
It’s so cold out there
Practically a blizzard
You grab your coat
Head outside to her
Offer her the coat
A cup of coffee
Blushing acceptance
A soft, sweet smile
A nod and then
She follows you
Back inside you buy
Her that cup of joe
Some cinnamon rolls
And you talk
She says it’s been
A long, hard year
She got divorced
Lost her job
After years of swearing
Completely off affection
You reach across the table
Touch her arm so lightly
You smile sadly and tell her
He doesn’t know what he lost
And I’ll help you out
God had a better plan
A beautiful girl doesn’t deserve
The hand you’ve been dealt
Do you have any kids
I’ll help them out too
That man didn’t deserve you
Our father knew it well
And beautiful girl I need to
Tell you something else
I think I’m falling in love
With you though we just met
What do you think
About that
She smiles
Then says
I think I am
Too

I like this as a premise to a short, silent film along the lines of that great animated short form 2012, Paperman. It’s simple, very sweet, very clear. I like the images you paint with the cold/blizzard– could be a metaphor for life in general sometimes, no? And then the warmth of coffee (strength) and cinnamon roll (sweetness/kindness) to bring out the pain she’s carrying. There’s just honesty in this poem. There’s no spooky subplot, no creepy backstory about how one of these two is a psychotic killer. It’s a dose of what everyone needs at certain moments in their life. The nurturing tenderness that ultimately grows into love.
