"Once Upon a Summer"
Now When I think back on things, when I think of how they impacted my life I cannot say that I am entirely sad. There are times that I find myself wishing things had not ended the way they did. The past though is in the past. My story starts like any story of childhood crush. We met when I was in 7th grade he was in 10th. His name was Adam, he was tall, skinny, with dark brown eyes, and the most wonderful chocolate brown eye I had ever seen. And I fell for him the first time I saw him. He was the son of a retired Army captain. They had moved next door to us in January. By summer he and my brother become good friends. He was always over at our house and like any school girl I took every opportunity to be in the same room. He was always kind to me, he picked on me like my brother did but he was always kind about it and never pushed my buttons too far (unlike my older brother). Well as they say time passed, Adam and my brother graduated and went off to college. I got over my crush and by 12th grade I was a budding wall flower. I was not skinny like the other girls in my class. I was round, curvy, and tall. I never thought I would see Adam again. That is until the night of the spring formal. I had gone with a group of friends but decided to leave early. It was a small town and we only lived a few blocks from school so I walked home. As I was walking up the walk to my front door I heard a familiar voice, “So what brings you home so early KitKat?” I whirled around to see Adam standing at the edge of his yard where it met mine. “It was getting late and I wanted to come home.” He smiled and walked over, “It’s only 10:30. No guys there to dance with?” he said jokingly, I shrugged, “None that want to dance with me.” his smile faded, “None, you mean no one wanted to dance with the prettiest girl there?” I didn’t want to talk about it. “What are you doing home? Aren’t you supposed to be at college?” He grinned, “Came home for my parents anniversary party .” “Oh yeah, mom said they were having a big party. She is making me go.” Adam laughed, “Well if it makes you feel better my mom is making me go too.” he chuckled, “Oh I didn’t mean to be rude. I just meant that my mom said I was invited and it would be nice of me to go.” “I’m glad your coming. It will give me someone else to talk to besides cousins.” He looked at me for a long moment, “You look really pretty tonight. I think this is the first time I have seen you dressed up with make-up and your hair done. You look really beautiful KitKat.” So much for being over my childhood crush. “Thank you Adam. I should go in. It was nice seeing you.” I put my hand out to shake. He took it and shook it gently, then said “Maybe while I’m in town we can hang out. You can tell me how Mark is. I haven’t heard from him since he enlisted.” “You want to hang out? With me?” Adam smiled, “Yeah, we used to…” he chuckled, “Or at least you used to hang out in the same room while Mark and I watched TV.” I blushed, “I was just trying to annoy my brother.” “Still it would be nice to catch up. Maybe tomorrow? We can go get some ice cream or a soda?” Before I knew what I was saying I said, “Sure, it’s Saturday and I don’t have anything else to do.” Adam smiled, “Great! How about noon?” “Sure, noon will be fine.”
I walked into the house where my mom was sitting in the living room knitting, “Your home early. How was the dance?” My mother asked, “It was OK. I just decided to come home. I didn’t have a date and everyone else was dancing.” she stood and walked over to me, “I’m sorry I made you go.” I smiled, “It’s OK mamma, besides, if I hadn’t I wouldn’t have run into Adam on the front yard.” Mamma looked at me, “Oh, is Adam home? I thought he wasn’t coming home until tomorrow.” I looked at, she was up to something, “Yes, he’s home.” I said walking to the stairs, “He saw me coming up the walk and said hi.” “Just hi? You too seemed to be doing a lot of talking for just Hi.” “Mamma! You were spying?” Mamma shook he head, “Chester went to the door like he always does when you come home and when you didn’t walk in I peeked out the window. I wasn’t spying, I was just making sure you were alright.” I giggled, “We did talk a little. He asked me if I would like to go get Ice cream or a soda tomorrow…” Mamma lit up, “Oh your first date!” “It is not a date mamma. He just asked if I would like to hang out.” “Well what did you say?” I smiled, “I told him sure.” Just them my dad came down the stairs, “Oh sweetie your home. How was the dance?” “It was fine Pappa.” “She has a date tomorrow!” Mamma said enthusiastically, Pappa froze, “A date? With who?” he asked sternly, “With Adam, you remember him. Andrew and Mary’s son.” Pappa looked from Mamma to me, “Isn’t he a little old for you Kitrina?” “It’s not a date Pappa. He just wan’ts to catch up and see how Mark is doing. Mamma is exaggerating.” “I still think he is too old.” Mamma shook he head, “He is not too old. He is only 2 years older than Kit and besides we are 4 years apart.” Pappa frowned, “Well, you tell him if want’s to date a girl he should ask her father.” I sighed, “It’s not a date. I can tell him I can’t.” “No you won’t your Pappa just doesn’t want you to grow up. You go with Adam.”
That night I had trouble sleeping. Even though I had insisted to my parents that it was not a date, I found myself hoping that it was. Oh if only Tomorrow would come sooner.
