It is no secret that most companies use phone interviewing as the first step in the hiring process. I have experienced this first hand while applying for jobs and internships. I’ve had the privilege of actually administrating phone interviews and have seen firsthand how they can either excel or stall your foot getting in the door.
The biggest tip I found to be really useful was ‘Get on the phone more often’. I have always preferred email and I often try to get as much as done through email as I possibly can. This isn’t the best preparation for phone interviews. Just picking up the phone and calling your friends or family can be a great start. I find it to be most helpful to dial up those who you may not be as close to. For example, although my hiring manager and I work well together, I feel much better corresponding with her through email versus a phone call. Stepping out of my comfort zone and using my phone will prove helpful during phone interviews.
I think nailing the greeting (No.1) is very important in setting the tone of the conversation. If you begin the conversation letting off that you are unsure or unprepared, this will throw the interviewer off and may make them less inclined to go further. Your greeting closely resembles a shortened introduction. You want to make sure you let the hiring manager know you are yourself and am ready to begin the interview. Another tip that I have found helpful that isn’t listed is to get dressed like you would for an in-person interview. This could not only help with your greeting, but with the phone interview overall.
