they both had the shell of a heart
of a
pomegranate
thick-skinned, only to protect the fragile rubies inside
too bold for their own good
they both loved from afar
they both laughed alone
they both slept crying
but those precious rubies, all perfectly sweet and tart
their beating seeds now only cry blood
