Side by side, I stayed alone.
My first three classes were stressful. People stared. I guess they didn’t have many new students in this district. I’d spent my entire third period, Personal Finance, looking up local skateparks on my computer when the teacher wasn’t looking. There was one maybe a five minute ride from school, and I had ever intention to go there after school.
I was not looking forward to lunch. I’d moved around a lot, and I wasn’t the best at making friends, so I usually sat alone. I always felt awkward, though. When the bell rang, signaling the end of third period, I packed up my textbooks and made my way to my locker, putting away my textbooks. I followed the stream of students going to the cafeteria, but immediately decided against eating in there. It was packed, and even as more people streamed in, there was not one empty table.
I backed out of the cafeteria, fishing my board out of my locker and deciding the practice tricks in the parking lot. I skated out to an empty part of the lot, starting off with an ollie. I was in the middle of perfecting my heelflip when a familiar voice suddenly cut in.
“Not one for the cafeteria crowd?” My foot missed the board, and I tumbled to he ground, landing hard on my ass. I looked over to see Trey walking over to me. He held a hand down. “Sorry to disturb you.”
“It’s fine,” I said, taking his hand. He hauled me to my feet, to which I promptly dusted my butt off. I reached my foot out for my board, putting weight on one end, then taking hold of the front axle so it rested beneath my armpit. “And no. I prefer to avoid people at all costs.”
He chuckled, to which I smiled. A beat passed before he spoke again.
“So…you skate?” he asked, peering at my board. I smiled, studying my precious baby.
“No,” I said sarcastically, and Trey smiled.
“Can you teach me?” he said after a moment, and I shrugged.
“Sure,” I replied, setting the board back on the ground. “Have you ever ridden before?”
He flushed, slightly embarrassed. “Uh, no, I haven’t.”
I whistled exasperatedly. “This could take a while.”
