Stepping off the trail,
then across the stream,
the waterfall grows,
louder, and more fierce.
A short climb further,
through lush greenery.
The base of the falls,
there’s no one around.
A giant boulder,
cracked, in the middle,
enough to walk in.
Moss and mist are here.
The roaring water,
echoing on rocks.
Looking up, sunlight.
Beams of it, floating,
caught amidst the spray.
Steep and covered cliffs,
hiding what’s above.
Then, a place to sit,
and view the splendor,
until the dusk comes.

I must admit I have a bias towards nature poetry, but this is absolutely captivating. Did you write this from experience or based on a real place? If so, I must know the location that inspired this piece. Both the direct and implied imagery are flawless. This is one of those rare pieces I come across where I have to force myself to come back to reality. Well done.
I am very glad that you enjoyed the piece so much. It is indeed inspired by a real place. In the Columbia River Gorge, on the Oregon side, interstate 84 EB has an exit for Starvation Creek at roughly mile marker 54. There’s a small parking area and a trail, but also a short walk that doesn’t quite go to the base of the waterfall there by the parking area. In order to get to the place talked about I had to cross the small stream and walk up the other side, then back again to get to the base of the waterfall, but it was private and splendid!. Thank you again for your great feedback!!! 🙂
I really enjoyed reading this piece. I love nature and hiking. This piece helped me to envision hiking and seeing all of these beautiful sights. The details you use create a strong picture in the reader’s mind. This is a sign of a good writer.
Thank you for the feedback and compliments! It makes my day that you liked it so much! Cheers!
Wonderfully written and as I read I can almost envision myself on this trail, thanks for sharing.
