CHAPTER ONE
Once upon a time long ago, there lived a young girl named Elizabeth. She lived with her grandmother in the forest. Elizabeth was not like any other ordinary girl. She had long, brown, brown hair and deep, blue eyes. Her waist was skinny and she had long legs. The thing that made her special, though, was her her ability to speak to insects. She couldn’t talk to animals, although she wished she could. Elizabeth often spent her free time mingling with the butterflies and bumble bees. What she loved most, though, was talking to the ants. Due to their small size, she had to listen very closely to hear what they said. The ants told Elizabeth all about their colony and how they made their home.
All was well in Elizabeth’s neck of the woods up until winter came and all of the bugs fled to the beaches and warmer areas. She knew that the bugs could not surivive the cold of the winter, but it was her first year knowing that she could speak to them. She absolutely adored talking to them and became suddenly depressed when they were gone. There was nothing anything anyone could do about it. Not Elizabeth, and not her grandmother, who she called Grannie May. Instead of going out and playing in the winter snow like she had done in previous winter, Elizabeth stayed in her room for which seemed like an eternity. Even when the weather started warming up and the insects began coming back, Elizabeth still stayed bundled in the sheets of her bed. Grannie May did all she could to bring her out of her room, but her efforts were useless. She thought all hope was lost until an idea came upon her.
