Once upon a time, in a bright, sunny garden, there lived a mole named Mary. Now, Mary was different than most of her friends for one very special reason. Mary was VERY curious and wanted to know about everything! Mary was always asking Momma Mole questions of all sorts.
“Momma, why do we dig in the earth?” and, “Momma, why do we eat worms?” were some of the questions Mary would ask. Momma Mole would just smile, shake her head, and tell Mary all about why moles do what they do. One day, Mary asked, “Momma, why can’t we ever see the sun?”
“Come sit with me”, Momma Mole said. “Mary, we moles live underground because our eyes can’t handle the sun. It is too bright for us. Do you understand?” Mary nodded slowly, but she didn’t quite understand. “One day, I’m going to see the sun!”, Mary said with determination.
A few days later, Mary decided this would be the day! She thought all morning about how nice it would be to lay in the sun, how she would bring a snack of delicious worms to eat on the green grass, and how she would take a nap afterward in the bright, warm afternoon. “It’s going to be wonderful!”, Mary said excitedly to herself. She slowly began to make her way through her underground tunnel and started digging up toward the grass!
Suddenly, a VERY bright light filled poor Mary’s eyes! She shrieked and quickly went back down the tunnel as fast as she could until she reached the family den. Momma Mole was waiting just inside. She took one look at Mary, shook her head, and said, “Oh, Mary, you went to see the sun, didn’t you?” Poor Mary just nodded pitifully, her eyes still sore.
After a little while, Mary felt much better. Momma’s worm cookies and tea always did the trick. “Momma”, said Mary after a while, “I’m sorry I disobeyed. I was so curious I didn’t listen.” Momma Mole smiled and said, “I think you’ve learned a lesson today, Mary”. “I sure have!”, Mary exclaimed. From now on, I’ll only be curious about things that won’t hurt my eyes!”
