This evening my sister, her fiance, and my brother, and I had taken a walk along this trail by our house. I had stepped out of the house for the second time today and was surprised by how dim it already was; I guess the sun was behind the scattered white clouds because I don’t remember seeing it. My brother and brother in law always got a bit ahead of us due to the skateboards they rode. Even if they rounded a corner and we couldn’t see them, we still heard the echoing click clack of their boards on every crack on the sidewalk. I had slowed down a few steps behind my sister as I looked up to admire the scattered clouds again; I noticed they’d been disperse for the past few days every time I’d see them. Out of the corner of my eye I saw my sister jump a bit to the side but keep walking. This caught my interest, so quickened my pace to where she had been when she startled and chuckled at what had been illuminated by the yellow lamp light on the sidewalk. Right below me was a large grasshopper. My sister was deathly afraid of grasshoppers; good thing we didn’t live out in the sticks anymore where they were everywhere. Though the grasshopper didn’t move, and then I noticed why. Small, black, moving dots littered the ground; ants, they were all around it and some on it. Ants were small, but in a colony they could easily take a grasshopper; I’ve seen it before. So I’d taken a leaf, about the same brownish green as the grasshopper, and tried to move it. As soon as I did, it made a tiny hop towards me which made me move out of the way; I don’t hate grasshoppers but I’m not a fan of how they jump around either. I tried to move it a bit further because the ants were crawling everywhere, but as soon as the crumpled leaf got near it, it turned and jumped right back into the middle of the moving ground. So I tried again but this time it jumped a bit to the side, right into the ant pile. Immediately it was swarmed. I tried twice more to get it to hop to safety on its own, however, it couldn’t jump far enough with it’s injuries. Finally I did a sweeping motion with the leaf that sent the grasshopper flying into the air and plopped into the grass; at least that’s better than being eaten alive I guess.
