Chapter Eight
Hannah
Being Poisoned sucks. Trust me, I would know. The only plus side is being by Mich 24/7. He is asleep now. I kept him awake all night, squirming with my nightmares. I dreamt of my little sister, running across the park field. She is wearing a party hat, it is her birthday, right after her fourth birthday party. All her friends have gone home and her, mom and I stay so she can play. She is laughing, a wide smile plastered on her face. But then, out of nowhere, is the panther. It pounces on her and she becomes just a lump of shredded flesh and oozing blood. I wake up screaming. Mich is wide awake, shaking my arm.
“We’re just in the cave,” he says in a soothing voice. I throw up for what feels like the millionth time and drink some broth. I can’t keep any liquid down. So I just drink more and more, and throw up more and more. And I cry. I am too miserable to be embarrassed, crying in front of a guy like Mich. He gathers me in his arms and I sob into his fur shirt.
“Don’t… want… die…” I choke out. Mich rubs my back and holds me tighter. Sometimes it bothers me how collected he is through all we’ve been through. He’s always so calm, and always knows what to do. That’s why he was the leader. He is the leader.
“You won’t die,” Mich promises. His voice wavers slightly. Like he is about to cry too. When I look up, there are tears in his eyes. I cannot help but smile at the thought that he may not be as perfect as I think he is.
“Am I a burden?” I ask. People know me to ask weird questions out of nowhere.
“Of course not!” Mich says, and lightly punches me on the shoulder. I wince. He looks down. “Sorry.”
“I don’t want to be a burden. I know I am,” I say.
“Very perceptive,” He says, and rests a stiff arm across my shoulders, careful not to put too much weight on me.
“So, stop treating me like a hurt puppy!” I say angrily. Tears are streaming down my face once more.
“Look, we’re all gonna be weak at one time or another,” Mich says. I can tell he is trying hard to comfort me. “Your time is now.”
