Can numbers be good or bad?

Rationally speaking, numbers are merely symbols; tools if you will.

HOWEVER, in my experience certain numbers are charged with barely hidden meanings.

Take for example the number 1. Is it the first? Most often, but to a computer scientist it’s second to zero.

Another number is 88, what do you think of when you see it? I think of two ice skaters practicing in unison.

How about the number 100? In binary it’s a 4, and 101 is five.

Do you have favorite numbers? I do. My affinity for 3 is lifelong.

Do you also have number aversions? I do. Two is not my style, neither is 7. 13 can go jump in a lake.

These favorites and least favorites are based on associations to emotions.

So, no, in a word, numbers cannot have morality but they can carry an emotional charge.

Interesting concept. I’ve always found numbers fascinating, especially the relationship between numbers. Phi – the golden ratio, which is the asymptote of the Fibonacci sequence, is 1.618… I think of it as the perfectly balanced ratio of 1, because if you multiply 0.618… x 1.618… you get… 1! So, perhaps in addition to carrying emotional attachments for us, numbers carry their own kind of special magic because they can express relationships found in nature.
