Have you ever seen something so terrible it made your blood run cold and your limbs freeze with fear? I never knew such terror existed until last night. I won’t let the fear get the better of me. I MUST start at the beginning.
My wife and I were married six months ago. We are happy and want to have a family someday. Why did I write that? We ARE happy and we love each other very much. God, the guilt still eats at me. We moved to this town a few weeks ago. I accepted a job that brought us here and we planned to have children. I’m not sure anything can be the same after what happened.
I have always loved walking through the woods. It has always brought me peace and clarity after a long day. Sometimes, my wife and I go on walks together, laughing and making plans for the future. As we returned at dusk one evening, we passed a our neighbor, Jerry, getting out of his car. “Out for a stroll?” Jerry said. “Just be careful about walking in the woods this late, don’t wanna wind up like those poor guys”. “What do you mean? Who?” I asked with skepticism in my voice. “Why, over the past few years, three men walked into those woods in the evening and were found dead the next day with broken necks”. explained Jerry. I felt a chill down my spine, a strange sense of foreboding, but I laughed it off and told Jerry we would indeed be careful. If only I had meant what I said.
Late yesterday afternoon, I decided to go for a walk in the woods. “Jerry’s pullin’ my leg”, I thought “He can’t be serious”. Just the same, I decided to take my phone with me. I had gone about half a mile when I felt a strange chill in the air. I shivered and went to turn my steps toward home, when I saw a thick most form just ahead of me. I was just about to turn around when out of the mist walked a beautiful, young woman dressed in white. I couldn’t believe my eyes as I simply stared at her. Her eyes were bright blue and she smiled longingly at me. I could not speak or ask her any questions. I simply stared and began to back away.
The moment I moved, I was conscious of her voice inside my head, telling me how she wanted me and what we would do together. My heart raced and I fought back the animal instincts that began to seize me as I stared at her. Her voice continued to ring in my head, saying the most lustful and lurid things. I struggled with myself for another minute and, at last, turned to run when my phone rang. It was my wife “I love you!”, I shouted into the phone. “I’m sorry!” I felt guilty for the terrible thoughts I had about the young woman. The moment I told my wife I loved her, the woman smiled again, but her eyes flashed and her face looked like that of a demon. All at once, she vanished and I ran all the way home.
When I got home, I sat at the kitchen table, trying to collect my thoughts. As I sat there shaking, my wife sat down next to me and placed an old newspaper clipping next to me. “Jerry gave it to me”, she whispered. Here is exactly what it said:

The body of a young man was found in Shepherd’s Woods early yesterday morning. Police say there are no signs of foul play and the death appears to be a tragic accident. The unidentified man suffered a broken neck and is believed to have died instantly. Cause of death is unknown, but some locals believe the man was lured to his death by the specter commonly known as “The White Lady”. The legend, as is commonly known to local residents, tells of a young bride who, when she discovered her new husband had been unfaithful, ran into Shepherd’s Woods and plunged off a cliff. Some legends state that the ghost “tests” young men by attempting to lure them to their death, although it is unknown exactly how she does it. This reporter, though, believes such talk to be pure fiction and fully expects a coroner’s report to uncover more earthly evidence.
