How do you begin to describe a scene that makes your blood run cold? How can you envision pure terror? The events I’m about to relate are completely true. Don’t make the mistake of not believing, as I did.
In our neighborhood, it was know simply as “the house”. The place itself was normal by all appearances, a single-story, small thing with black shutters. It looked like any other house on Evergreen Street. That was the very essence of the evil that still lurked inside.
Everyone knew the story. Ten years ago, a single mother and her two daughters, ages five and 7 had lived there. The family would greet neighbors in passing, but would never go out of their way. They kept mostly to themselves. No one knows for certain what transpired on that tragic, October evening, but I think the simplest, yet most sinister theory is the correct one. Authorities were called to the scene of an accident just outside the home around 8:00 p.m. one night. The five year-old girl had, by all appearances, chased a kitten into the busy street. This was evidenced by the fact that both the little girl and the kitten were struck by a speeding car, killing both instantly.
The tragedy didn’t end there. A few days before the little girl’s funeral, authorities were called again to the home. Nothing could prepare them for the sight that met their eyes. The seven year-old was found in her bed, killed by what was later ruled to be suffocation. The mother….the mother was found at the end of the hallway, hanging from a bedsheet. Authorities believed she had snapped, killed her remaining daughter and then herself.
Fast-forward to my part in the story. Last Halloween, a morbid curiosity seized me. I resolved, along with a friend I won’t name, to go the tragic home and glance through the windows. It was, after all, the night for such expeditions and I wanted to catch a glance of the legendary hallway.
My God, how do I describe what I saw there? My friend and I approached the house around 11:00 p.m. We were both a little nervous, but determined to go through with it. We walked slowly through the yard and approached one of the black-shuttered windows. With my heart pounding, I looked inside. There IT was. There SHE was.
I stood frozen in terror as I saw it. Through the window, I could see the end of the hallway. Swinging with terrifying speed from a bedsheet was the figure of a woman. She looked more like a demon. She had scraggly, dark hair, gaping red eyes, and a wide, insane grin that made my heart leap into my chest. I nearly fainted as she wriggled out of the bed sheet and began to walk back-and-forth down the hall, peeking into what must have been her daughter’s bedrooms.
I caught sight of my friend who was simply affixed in place with terror. What came next froze the scream in my throat. A red-eyed form of a little girl shuffled slowly out of one of the bedrooms. Her eyes were wide and we could hear her GASPING for breath with every step. She and her demonic mother walked back and forth down the hallway, searching for something or SOMEONE.
My friend and I tore ourselves from the window and ran blindly to my house. We lay panting on the floor for a long time, too horrified to utter a word. It only occurred to me much later that the mother and daughter were searching for the child who had been struck by the car. Had they been wandering that awful hallway for the past ten years?
I write this hoping someone will read it and believe my story. I hope the town tears down that God-forsaken place. Every night when I close my eyes, I see those red eyes, the hideous grin, and I hear the little girl GASPING for breath, stuck in the moments when her own mother had suffocated her.
