Why do I tire my eyes
Watching princesses and heroes lives?
Maybe because they try and their
“try” is never wasted
and whenever there’s danger
they always face it
they’re not afraid to jump off buildings
swing on vines
they know they’ll always
come in the nick of time.
But I, oh but I
will jump off things and fall on my face
run a race
and never taste
Victory
Or get my hand held high
So I guess this is why
I flock to screens
the reason why I binge watch TV
Because I want heroes and princesses
for an hour, to deceive
and remind me of what I can never be.

I think this is beautiful and lovely, but I disagree. I don’t know you, but isn’t this poem the very proof that when you “try” you can create something so heroic and amazing as this piece? Try on 🙂
Thank you so much. I was in my feelings when I wrote this one; college was definitely getting to me.
Don’t worry, you will eventually win. If you take everything that life throws your way and are still left standing, you win.
I enjoyed reading your poem, and I admit that my knowledge of poetry is very limited, so I am unable to offer any critiques. With that being said I would like to say that I found it moving and enlightening, if not a little sad. The ring of defeat is heavy towards the end, and I would have to agree with Anne that the existence of the poem is an act of defiance in the face of failure. I will always believe that having the courage to start and finish something and then share that with the world is as much of a heroic act as anything you’ll see one of the TV heroes accomplish.
I dig this poem. Go to any movie theater on a Wednesday afternoon and you will find brothers of this fantasy world. They seek to escape reality for two hours at a time. The problem with TV is that it can become a pacifier and prevent us from taking part in the life around us, good and bad.
