I would you like to tell you quite a funny story from my camp that I had this summer. Just a heads up for privacy reasons I won’t be telling you the locations or names of my friends. Their true identities will be hidden with fake names. And I, will also be different than what I truly am. (in name only)Hope you enjoy and please comment if you wish.
Chapter One Concerning Popcorn and Snow cones
As us girls(some at least)walked over to form a big group for a play we would be showcasing later on in the week, I noticed a girl sitting among the shadows of an oak with someone who appeared to be her Mother. She looked shy yet beneath the surface you could sense an outgoing personality within. Her rather long brown curly hair was snatched up in a ponytail that let forth some wisps of hair to fold around her ears. Her blue eyes eagerly watched the new actresses take the grassy stage to perform their male or female roles. (boys weren’t allowed in this camp. They had a separate one later on in the summer)
I sat farther behind almost hidden myself, but one other teenager sat by me who I met just recently that morning. The black haired friend ate her snow cone passionately as if it wanted to run away from her and not to return.
“It’s not going anywhere.” I said smiling jokingly.
“Oh,yes it is,” she pointed to her stomach.
We laughed sorta quietly as not to disturb the teachers who were scrambling about pointing fingers at the words on the girls’scripts.
I wanted so much to fit in with the so called, “cool smartsy group, “but in my heart I craved for that always on the bright side girl to be apart of my life. Even if it took my whole being to leave the popular group of summer camp.
Thirty minutes passed and rehearsal still continued like chickens scrambling around after a trespasser entered the coop with a rifle in his hands. My new friend, Mena tried her best not to giggle at the crazy schedule. I loved watching the play unfold, our teachers smiling at the big or small mistakes, correcting them as they went along.
The mystery girl whispered to her Mom ever so often and I noticed she was talking about me! Was it good things? Bad maybe?! I just knew in my mind I had to figure out this person so lovely in the shadows of loneliness. It was up to me to drag her out into the sunshine of love and kindness.
I turned my head to face her in the back.
“Did you get any popcorn or a snow cone?” I asked the girl.Really?!!Is that the first thing that popped into your head?!
“Yes..yes we did. Thanks for asking us.” she replied meekly looking at her Mom for aid.
Then I said it, “You can sit with me if you want.”
Her eyes and face lit up with pure joy. Slowly she inched her way toward me and that was the start of the most beautiful friendship. Even IF it started out with popcorn.
My friend, Mena casted a look of annoyance and marched off to join the,”cool group.”
I didn’t care if I was not, “cool.” As long as I had this girl nothing could be miserable. We had each other and that’s all we really wanted..to be together.
Finally play practice drew to a close. We stood up, brushed ourselves off from the dirty grass, and we were about to find a place to relax when someone shouted, “POND! LET’S GO TO THE POND!! GRAB YOUR LIFE JACKETS AND HEAD TO THE CARS! “We smiled at each other in disbelief. This was camp, you were always on your toes.
