The blinding light of unity shines on the river.
Rocks stand, unchanged, under endless water.
Breeze blows through trees, and traffic lights turn red
Saying “stop!”
But it doesn’t stop.
Sandstorms rage across deserts destined to kill.
87 degrees in the city.
Survivors gather in shade.
Standing by his door, he kisses her goodnight.
Far away, gunfire can be heard.
A young boy has breakfast before school
He knows he is loved, so he eats with pleasure.
A man lies on the sidewalk in freezing darkness,
Coughing and warmed by rags.
A woman hugs her old friend who she hasn’t seen in years.
As they talk, time apart begins to mean nothing.
It was all yesterday.
The river continues to flow.
Into the sea that is life for us all.
