Oftentimes when philosophers discuss music, they tend to focus exclusively on classical music. This is because of its tradition and beauty and how well it lends itself to philosophical thought. However, other types of music such as rock, jazz, and pop are neglected when this narrow philosophical focus occurs. In today’s day and age, classical (and jazz, for that matter) music has fallen to the side in favor of mainstream pop music, so it makes more sense to bring pop and other music into philosophy. Several questions are brought up by modern music: Pop music creates the question of whether it is truly musically meaningful if the songs are purely written to make money and gain listeners. Jazz music creates the question of whether the context or emotion behind the song are relevant to the meaning as a whole. Rock music creates the question of if the performance of rock is truly part of the art of the music, or if just the time recording in the studio counts.
