long ago there was a boy. he lived a carefree life as a merchants son. but upon entering a forbidden forest, he encountered a demon of misfortune. this demon intended on possessing the boy’s body then using it to grow stronger. however, the demon was unable to. the boy’s soul was too strong and drove the demon back deep into his body and mind. that is where it remained sealed, silently cursing the boy for imprisoning it. but the boy was not completely lucky to have escaped his fate, he could no longer live with others. he now possessed both the demon’s power and it’s karma, thus he brought misfortune wherever he went, and everything around him was cursed with bad luck. once he realized this, he knew he must leave behind the world and all he cared for. he first thought of death, but with the demon residing in him, no matter how much he attempted suicide, nothing would work. his body would only heal it’s self over and over using the demon’s power. the boy had but one other option. as he took a final look at the world, he jumped into a lake and he sunk. that is where he stayed, in the cold dark depths of the lake.”
“aki!” said hikaru laughing, “quit it!” she continued to splash him with water.
“not until you apologize for taking the last slice of melon!” she said grumpily, yet still baring a smile on her face. their class decided to take a field trip to a lake located in the mountains. not only did it hold a great amount of history, but it also had a number of strange stories. the mysterious song that could be heard at night, missing children and illness from the water. all say it’s because of the lake’s ghost, but with no evidence the lake remains open. it was no surprise that it was chosen by the class, not that the other option was very great. the lake is definitely better then an old farm he thought.
“fine, fine! i’m sorry!” hikaru shrugged and put his hands up in surrender. aki studied him thoughtfully before starting to splash him once again.
“you’re not forgiven!” she responded. hikaru blocked his face and then began to splash as well. he wasn’t a very good match against her however, and was soon over whelmed.
“it’s time to head back to the cabins everyone!” said the teacher. “it’s expected to rain today and it’s getting late, we don’t want anyone to get lost.” the class quickly packed up their belongings, grabbing towels, sunblock and umbrellas.
once everyone had packed, they began down the forest path leading to the cabins. “it’s already started to rain!” aki complained as she covered her head. “my hair’ll get all wet!” hikaru gave her a puzzled look.
“isn’t it already wet?” he asked, confused.
“but it was just starting to dry!” she whined. he rolled his eyes and quickened his face. “wait! hikaru, don’t leave me!”
the rain pounded against the roof and the wind blew hard. it caused the outside bush to scrape against the window, creating an eerie scratching noise. a large boom from the sky echoed, and screams from the girl’s cabins followed. “shit man!” said one of the boys with a sigh, “if only we were over there to ‘comfort’ them!”
“right bro? i’m sure they’re in need of a few brave knights to stay with them through the storm.” another pitched in. hikaru just simply shook his head.
“hey guys! here’s an idea, why don’t we just sneak over there?” a guy stepped forward, “the teachers are probably cowering in their cabins right now, so they’d never notice.”
“good idea touma!” they all gathered by the door.
“come on hikaru, don’t be such a stiff, lets go!” touma said with a smirk.
“no i’ll just-” he didn’t get a chance to finish. touma grabbed him by the arm and started pulling him towards the door.
“come on! don’t you want to see your girlfriend?” he asked mockingly.
“she’s not my girlfriend.” hikaru argued. his complaint was either not heard or ignored, and he was dragged out anyway.
they trudged through the pouring rain, the wind hard at their faces. it drenched their clothes, soaking the boys hair and bodies. current lightning strikes made them stop often and look around hesitantly.”touma… maybe we should go back to the cabin now… those strikes are getting closer.” one boy announced at the back of the crowd. a murmur of agreements came after.
“don’t be such pussies!” he responded angrily, “do it for the girls, man!” just then a strike of lightning hit a tree in front of them. the tree came crashing down, landing with a loud thud. the boys panicked and began running in different directions. within the confusion, someone grabbed hikaru and pulled him along, “hold on!” he shouted, yet his words were ignored. this feels familiar he thought to himself, slightly annoyed.
hikaru soon found himself wandering the forest. the one pulling him, which most likely had been touma, had lost grip when hikaru pulled away. though maybe he should have stayed with him. hikaru could barely see his surroundings. the blanket of night covered the forest and the only source of light was the full moon, which was mostly blocked by the trees. hikaru looked up through an opening in the canopy. the clouds had already dissipated and the rain had stopped. now the sky could be seen clearly. “the moon… it’s red.” hikaru said astonished, his eyes shining as he gazed upward. he continued to gawk at it for a few more seconds before something else caught his eye. a light… coming from a clearing ahead. it’s the cabins! he thought with relief and quickly rushed over. he started to make his way through the bushes, but an out stretched branch raked against his left cheek. he winced, then felt the blood run down his face. slowly it grew colder against the cool night air. he ignored it and continued through the brush. once he made his way out, he touched his cheek softly. the slight increase in pain made him grind his teeth. he turned his attention to what he thought to be the cabins, yet that was not what stood before him. the light was being admitted from the lake. he took a step forward, but quickly refrained from taking another. he noticed something laying on the shore, the light coming from it blurred it’s figure. he continued cautiously, the closer he got, the more he became nervous. the light began to fade and soon it vanished. now he could clearly make out the object.”it’s a person?” he said, a flurry of emotions thick in his tone, fear, worry, amazement, curiosity.
hikaru rushed over to the boy and bent down, he was completely soaked. he examined the boy’s clothes first. he was dressed in traditional japanese clothing. however they were worn, damaged and very faded. they may have been impressive in their prime, but now were simply rags. hikaru raised his hand to the boys face, slowly and timidly. he brushed the crimson red hair from the boys eyes. then he stared, enchanted. “he looks like a girl.” he said bluntly as he studied him. he allowed his eyes wander to the boys rising an falling chest and his pale yet muscular legs.”but he’s definitely a guy”. what was he supposed to do? he had just found a washed up boy on the lake’s shore, not to mention he was previously glowing. what if he’s an alien here to take control of earth!? he scratched at his head in frustration, unsure of what the best option was. he turned his head back to the boy, he knew he couldn’t just leave him here.
hikaru sighed and hoisted the boy up onto his back. “damn, you’re one heavy bastard!” hikaru puffed under the boys weight. he dragged him off the beach and onto the grass, then took off his own sweatshirt and laid it over the boy. “i’ll be back soon, tomato.” he said to the boy, looking over his shoulder and mentally chuckling at his ‘creative’ nickname. he quickly went off and gathered wood for a fire, then returned shortly with as much as he could carry. he put them into position and grabbed two stones from the shore. he sat there clacking the rocks together, trying to get even just a small spark. “hell, this is harder to do then it looked!” he gave it another shot, using more muscle this time. “lucky!” he yelled proudly as a spark landed into the wood and began to grow. the flame danced rhythmically to the slight breeze. hikaru began to hum his mother’s lullaby which blossomed to words.
under our tree, we shall meet again. i will wait for you, you will come back to me, that is why i wait under this tree. even if you don’t return, promise to keep me in your heart. for we are never too far apart.
his eyes fluttered closed, drifting off into a calm, deep sleep. hikaru was awoken by a tight grip around his throat, in which pushed him into the ground. his eyes quickly shot open and instantly he choked for air. he looked up, a pair of eyes staring hostilely down at his. each was the color of the sky, a light, icy blue.
