I’m not sure what just happened, but I woke up in my bed. There isn’t anything out of the ordinary, that’s wrong, just my head spinning and my hand wrapped in gauze. My tv still has GrownUps on the play screen how I left it last night, also my phone is on the charger where I left it. I make my way down the stairs, seeing my brother playing on his phone, mom and dad are cooking breakfast. As soon as breakfast is ready I see a tiny cut on the back of my mother’s head, with no hair surrounding it.
“Mom, what’s that?”
“What’s what hunny bun?”
“That-”
My dad interrupts saying, “Alright eat up before it gets too cold. No one likes cold eggs and bacon.”
There is something going on, why is my mother acting all stiff. Maybe she just didn’t work out this morning. After breakfast my brother runs up the stairs and slams his bedroom door, like he always does. I follow him up, and turn back to see if Mom or Dad is following me I then get yanked into my brothers room, “Shhh!” he says covering his mouth with one finger.
“What! Don’t do that!” I hit him.
“Dude what happened to your hand?”
“I really don’t know, I woke up with this on”
“Did you notice anything different with Mom?”
“Yeah, she was all stiff.”
“No idiot! She was acting robotic like someone put a chip in her head or something.”
“That explains the slit in the back of her head”
“Don’t let anyone know, and you probably want to get that checked out with the nurse.”
We get to school and everyone seems to be acting normal. Well as normal as normal can get I guess. I see my best friend Lilly, she waves all excited like I didn’t just see her yesterday. We head to first period History class, I raise my hand to answer a question, which I never do. As soon as I put my hand up the bandage falls off. Exposing the oozing, crimson hole in the middle of my hand.
“Hahaha! Are you Jesus or something!?” I hear someone say. I run out of the classroom heading towards the nurses office. I knock on the door, because there’s a rumor going around that the nurse has been sleeping with a senior boy throughout school days. It slowly opens, I peek around the corner to find her on the floor with blood running across the floor. I run out to find a teacher in the hallway. I finally catch the Foods teacher and drag her to the nurses without a word. We get to the nurses and she’s gone. There’s no nurse, no blood, nothing.
‘What the hell, Every. Do you need help or something? You should go to the school psychiatrist.” She walks away.
Baffled. I walk to the cafeteria and just stay there throughout all five lunch periods, then I go to the library to see Andrew there reading a book called, “The unabused”. I’ve never in my life seen him read anything, but his phone. He waves me over, and shows me a picture of the same exact slit that our mom had in the back of her head this morning. I pull out my phone, but he stops me from unlocking it.
“You can’t tell anyone that we know anything, not even Lily!”
‘How are we going to stop this? Our mother is a robot!” I say a little too loud, and everyone turns to us.
“We need to be smart about this before we’re next!” He whispers.

I like how we are in the main characters mind and get to figure out what is happening alongside them. It adds to the mysterious element.
Thank you!
