Bacon and Eggs
Author – Atina Nikpour
Our story begins present day with Adam, an underpaid farm worker. Working hard everyday, he barely gets any time to spend with what he has left of a family. After a long day of work, he would go home to see his daughter, who was still recovering from the death of her mother and his wife, who had passed away due to lung cancer. While going to his tiny raggy shed next to the farm, which he refers to as his home, he stops to open the door, but then hears a tiny, rather shrill voice. “Well hey there! I’m ruby” says the small voice down at his feet. He looks down to see a lady frog, looking rather peppy for a cloudy grey day. “Hello? What are you doing here?” Adam responds confused, trying to pretend like its a normal thing to see a talking frog, about ready to wake up right now. “Well, I’m here to make all your dreams come true.” “And how exactly would you grant my dreams, assuming you even know what they are? I highly doubt that you even know my name” Adam replies, obviously annoyed by the slimy creature at his foot. Seeing that Adam is disgusted by her and is about to turn away, the frog quickly snaps back, “Adam. Your name is Adam, and I am Ruby. Your one dream is to live with a family, like you used to. You want a good life, waking up to bacon and eggs just like anybody else would, and I can make that happen.”
Astonished, Adam stumbles back on a bail of hay, sitting down now fully attentive to the frog. “How… How can you make that happen. Wait no let me guess, I have to kiss you, and THEN I get my dream life.” Ruby, now embarrassed says yes, leaving Adam to his decision, which was to either believe this random frog who came her out of absolutely nowhere, or go back inside to continue his miserable life. Thinking about his options, he decides to go with the first one. He kisses ruby, expecting to get his wife back, in an amazing house with his happy daughter. Instead, he finds himself blinking awake on a soft, silk sheeted bed. He stumbles up, regretting the choice he made, starting to notice that he’s not getting out of his beaten up bed in his raggy little shed. However, he is standing to his feet sinking into a soft, white carpeted floor, looking back he saw an elegant king sized bed, which was much too big for only one person. He walked down the beautiful stairs to see a marble topped counter, where a lady had her back turned, to where Adam could see a very familiar shade of brown hair, with dusty blonde highlights around this familiar lady’s hair. “Excuse me” Adam asks “Am I in the wrong place? Why am I here? Who are you?” The lady turns back, laughing “Well those are some weird questions you have for a wife you’ve been married to for twelve years, Adam.” that laugh is really familiar, too familiar… adam nearly had a heart attack, right then and there. This is normally the part of his dream where he would wake up, snap back to reality, but no, this was real. This was Irene, his wife, but he kept on wondering, how? “Irene?” Adam says, his voice under-confident, and even cracking a little. “Yes?” His wife confusedly responds, turning around. He runs up her, pulling her into his arms, both of them sinking in a warm, love filled hug. Adam stumbles into the dining room, looking at his grinning daughter, happily eating cereal. She was wearing a clean, fresh school uniform. “What would you like for breakfast honey?” Irene laughs out, still confused from all the questions Adam had been asking earlier. “Bacon and eggs please, my love. Bacon and eggs.”
