Chapter 3
The next week we spent getting to know the area. In the morning I would take walks on the beach and watch the sunset rise, it was in these moments I felt that no matter what my future would be one of my own making. By the time I would get back to the cottage there would be a hot cup of earl grey sitting on the table waiting for me. I had assumed Ann had made it for me and one on one of those early morning I told her as she was walking through to the back patio, “Thank you for making me a cup of tea Ann, but I can make my own.” Ann looked at me funny on her way out, “I didn’t make you a cup of tea.” She said walking through the door; it had to have been Alic, but how did he know what tea and how I like it? I finished and then went up to change, I was deep in thought when I ran into… a statue?
No not a statue, I had run right into Alic who had just finished showering. His arms went around me to catch me as I stumbled. “Are you ok?” I looked up at him, his hair was wet and tousled and his eyes twinkled with his amusement. “I…I’m fine.” I straightened up and walked to my room. Ok, so I still liked Alic a lot, this feeling though was different. Looking back I can say with certainty that I loved him. While the thought of a summer romance is every girls dream I knew I wanted more. Alic though was going to be finishing up at university and then starting life. I was going to be a freshman and he wouldn’t want me, I was like his kid sister.
Later that day we all took a drive to visit the oracle at Delphi. It was gorgeous, before we left Ann insisted that we ask the oracle a question. We asked but we didn’t get a response. We stopped in the market place to do some shopping. Alic and I were walking together when an old woman stopped us, “Would you like a bracelet for your love young man?” I started to say, “Oh, I’…” she looked right at me, “Why do you run from love? You are so young and yet you think with the wisdom of the old one’s. Choosing the right path is important but you will miss out on the treasure before you if you run.” “How much for those two matching silver bracelets?” Alic asked trying to distract the old woman. She smiled at him, “For you…nothing.” she handed them to him, “Everyone is given a gift that truly makes their lives worth living. Hold onto yours youngman. Even Hades knew he had found his queen the moment he saw Persephone.” We thanked her and walked away, “Wow, that was strange…so specific.” The rest of the day went without incident. I could not get what happened out of my mind. I was running from my feelings for Alic…but how could the old woman have known?
