I had a dream, one night in high school
About the woods of Cacapon State Park
I’d visited it, so many times
So many years ago now
With my paternal grandmother
In the dream we looked for her
Everywhere.
But she was gone.
Everyone worried.
But I found her.
It was by a waterfall
Yet the water below was so still
And as I waited, she came
Dressed in her nightgown
She walked toward the pool
I watched her in my dream
Walk calmly into the water
There was no reaction as her head slipped under
Only peace
Soon there was no trace of her
I found the dream odd
And never had it again
I never told anyone about it
But my grandma always asked us
As the Alzheimer’s set in four years later
“When were we going to leave Cacapon?”
