First, allow me to say immediately that this post is informational and not a work of fiction. I apologize that it is not particularly riveting or attention-grabbing, but I feel it is necessary. There is an odorless, tasteless killer in many American homes even at the time of this writing. In case you have not already figured it out, the killer’s name is carbon monoxide.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, carbon monoxide (CO) is “an odorless, colorless gas….” It is produced by the burning of fuel in cars or trucks, small engines, stoves, lanterns, grills, fireplaces, gas ranges, or furnaces.
Common symptoms of CO poisoning include headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. Worst of all, if CO is present in a home, inhabitants can die sleeping before any symptoms become apparent.
Preventive steps are extremely important for both home owners and renters. Battery back-up CO detectors, particularly those with digital readouts are most helpful. Furnaces, fireplaces, water heaters, and any other gas, oil, or coal burning appliances should be serviced annually. Chimneys are also a common source of CO and should be cleaned annually.
If you or a loved one experiences symptoms associated with CO poisoning, evacuate the premises immediately, move to fresh air, and notify the local fire department. I write these warnings from personal experience, having nearly lost some dear friends to a killer many of us rarely, if ever, think of.
