When you’re a writer, and your home or office environment isn’t ideal for writing, you might find yourself writing in a public setting. And when this happens, you might catch yourself thinking a few of these items on this list. Here are the top 6 things every writer experiences when writing in a public setting:
)The music choice is terrible. If you find yourself at a coffee shop or a casual restaurant, you might find yourself thinking this:Wait. Wasn’t I just listening to some Jack Johnson before? All of sudden Alice in Chains is playing. What is going on with this place? At this rate, you might be better off plugging in your headphones. And when you have your headphones on, you are indicating to the world that you don’t want to be bothered with. It’s a double win.
)The one table available is, of course, messy and dirty. At this rate, a dirty table is better than no table. This might bother you as you type your masterpiece, and while doing so, you find a mysterious crumb on your keyboard.
)You might become an expert conversation snooper or people watcher. This is inevitable. This might make or break your ability to write. On one spectrum, this might be a good moment to get good inspiration or writing material; on the other spectrum, this might distract you. All of sudden you’re more interested in the next person’s drama than your own writing material.
)You worry that you’re becoming a freeloader. Whenever you write at a coffee shop or cafe, you feel obligated to become a loyal patron. After all, it feels only right to pay for a cup of coffee or a sandwich. You’re essentially using their location as their public office.
)You might become friends with the employees at the establishment. This is also an inevitable thing. As you establish your typical “writing spot” the employees will have your name and your typical order down pat. You might ask yourself if this is a good thing or if this is sad. Don’t think about it too much. There’s writing to be done.
)Editing and proofreading might be a challenge. In a public setting, it’s no longer socially acceptable for you to read your writing out loud. You will have to mouth your words a bit in order to find the errors. Beware. You might get a few stares while doing this.
