All of the bird base Sporadical members assembled for an emergency meeting. Sannis and Rubi stood in front of a group of people that was much larger than what Mory would have expected. The two of them were on top of the mega hut while everyone else listened from the ground. Sannis shouted through a cone made of thick parchment to amplify his voice.
“The arthropods have invaded the Land of Fish by entering through a southeastern village, via the Ganchian Ocean. The entire continent of Keanos has responded and armed forces from each of the other four lands are headed there to help. I have decided that this is the battle where Sporadical will join the fight!”
The base members went wild. They threw their hands in the air, jumped for joy, and screamed at the top of their lungs. Sannis gave them some time for celebration. After all of the work that they all had put in, they deserved it. Mory kept himself composed, but he too was excited about the news.
“Alright, alright, everyone. Let’s reel it back in. The intervention will be executed by a well-trained group from the fish base. As for the bird base, we will depart from the Land of Birds in twelve days and head to the Land of Reptiles. I’m about to throw some big numbers your way, so bear with me.” Sannis cleared his throat.
” There are about four thousand total Spora in the Land of Birds. I believe roughly seventy percent of them are of an age and health status suitable for supporting the Sporadical cause. We currently have about seventeen hundred members here at the bird base. The plan is to increase that number to at least twenty-four hundred before we leave, meaning we need to add seven hundred members in the next twelve days. We will have to do heavy-duty recruiting while trying not to raise suspicion from the Land of Birds. We make up less than two percent of the total population, so we can certainly fly under the radar, but if the BLAU somehow catches on, be prepared to leave this land at any time. If you have any questions, please direct them to your training group captains.”
Sannis then declared that the meeting was adjourned. The members were still buzzed from earlier. They were slow to break up, but the crowd eventually dispersed after a while. Mory was on his way home, but then a special someone came to his mind. Sona. He wondered what she must’ve been doing at that moment. Would she remain at the BLAU base or did they intend to send her to the Land of Fish? Mory needed to know. He needed to see her one last time before he left.
Knowing exactly where to go, Mory ran west towards the base. He just needed to pass through Hen Village, and then he was at the air unit’s big wall and front gate. Mory remembered the giant wooden gate with the dove carved into it from when he visited the base with his father as a kid. He knew he wasn’t going to be able to pass through the gate without special permission. The base was heavily patrolled as well, so flying in was not an option. To see Sona, he had to rely on stealth tactics.
Since he had been there many times in the past, he knew the layout of the entire base and all of its weak spots in terms of security. He went back into the neighborhood and traveled along a central road until he turned left and climbed a large hill. Once he reached the top, he lied down in front of a shield of tall grass. The result of his journey was that he now had a solid view of the recovery tower while staying out of the sight of any patrolmen. He was about three hundred meters away from the building. If he saw Sona entering or leaving the tower, he planned to rush down there and quickly say whatever he needed to say to her.
Mory realized that there was something odd about his plan. What was it that he needed to say? Why was he going to risk getting caught just to speak to Sona? Despite his uncertainty, something kept him in that spot. There was something about her that made it worth the risk.
He waited for quite some time. When it felt like half an hour had passed by, he began to have second thoughts. He was ready to give up and go home, then something caught him by surprise. Out of the blue, Reni trotted into the tower. Mory wondered if he had been injured. After about another five minutes, Reni rushed back out. Then an even bigger surprise emerged. Terias walked out of the tower door.
Mory was disgusted at the sight of him. He was tempted to run down there and bash his head in. The surprises didn’t end there. When Terias got a few steps away, Sona came out of the tower and sped up to catch him. What happened next seemed like an awful dream to Mory. Sona spoke a few words to Terias, then she gently held his face in her hands and kissed him.
All life was drained from Mory in that instant. All confidence was lost. Any shred of morale was destroyed. He was nothing but an empty vessel, a shell of a beaten soul. With all that was left in him, he walked away.
