In August 2013, a New Jersey man was fined $ 32,000 by the Federal Communications Commission for operating a cheap GPS jammer . The FCC announced that the man, a driver who uses a work-supplied vehicle, “alleged that he installed and operated the jamming device in his company-supplied vehicle to block the GPS system that his employer was using installed in the vehicle “.
Gizmodo, a tech news source, investigated GPS tracker jammers and found them to be “dangerous, cheap, and easy [to source and use]”. They’re illegal too, but that doesn’t stop people, including drivers, from using them. As well as harming your business, GPS scramblers can disrupt the emergency frequencies used by 9-1-1, ambulance, fire and police services. GPS signal jammer was even responsible for disrupting aircraft navigation.
The use of GPS jamming devices may be more widespread than expected. According to a 2012 study (known as the Sentinel Project), there are between 50 and 450 cases of GPS tracker malfunction every day in the UK. Fleet drivers and truckers were responsible for 90% of these cases. Another study carried out by Rohde & Schwarz in 2014 found that around one in three trucks on a major highway in the US transmit at the same frequency as GPS – and implied that these trucks are likely using GPS signal jammers.
To understand how GPS handheld jammer work, it is helpful to familiarize yourself with how GPS works. GPS stands for Global Positioning System and works via the GNSS network (Global Navigation Satellite System). A GPS tracker connects to the GNSS network. GPS signal jammers send out a radio signal at exactly the same frequency as the GPS device, which overrides the signals sent by the satellite. In this case, a GPS tracking device cannot determine its exact location because the scrambler is interfering with its signal.
GPS blockers are generally small and easy to install. It takes less than a minute to turn on and can be installed and removed discreetly. They are illegal under federal law and could cost individuals fines or imprisonment to use. Even so, GPS tracker jammers are widespread and often cheap.
