He took a clean white bucket from under the sink. Filled it with water about halfway full and left it outside in his backyard to run an experiment.
Would the bucket dry out sooner from the sun or fill up by the rain?
The bucket stayed clean about a week. Then some bugs had made their way in and drank, then drowned and died. The experiment must live on.
Some wind blew and dirt got in. The sun beat down and had evaporated the surface level by an inch. That was after one week passed. Would the water evaporate? Or would it gain moisture from the cold nights?
Finally a rain came three weeks later and filled the bucket back to its original mark, maybe a fraction higher.
The bucket was getting dirty, even though it went untouched. It was just sitting on a flat surface with small rocks, pebbles, and dirt.
The man checked in every week. Nothing much had changed, but he would take notes. He suspected that bucket of water might not fill and might not empty anytime soon. If it were to fill, he would plant a garden and perhaps a tree. If it dried, then he would wash the bucket and think about moving.
He wanted more rain in his life. He wanted a lush garden. But he was waiting for a sign that would tell him that hard work would pay off and that he could rely on the rain.
